The Airframe Design Division of the Navy BUreaunof Aeronautics comissioned Battelle Memorial Institute to survey the then present state of knowledge and to prepare a book to provide additional help to the designer. This work was a standard design reference work after the Korean War, during a period of intense development in aeronautical design with combat aircraft expected to fly higher, faster, and be more maneuverable in flight than previously.
