Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good dj. Illustrated by (dj) "Nick" (illustrator). First Edition. (price-clipped) [light shelfwear, foxing to top of text block, old gift inscription (non-authorial) "To Mother" on Mothers' Day 1943 on front endpaper, small bookseller's rubber-stamp (Bouth's Book Depot Ltd., Wellington) on front endpaper also; the jacket is edgeworn and soiled on the rear panel]. Adventure yarn about a Fleet Street journalist who gets involved in espionage in the early days of World War II. "It was during a raid that he first met the refugee-girl; she introduced him to the little band of patriots who were keeping up a messenger service between England and the Continent, and they, in their turn, persuaded him to undertake the job in Berlin, which was the start of so many adventures." The author wrote a dozen or so novels in the 1930s and early 1940s, and another five under the name "Wallace Jackson." The catalogue records of the British Library give his actual name as William John Budd, which comports with what's handwritten on the title page of this copy: on the title page, someone has placed quotation marks around "Jackson Budd" and has written "William John Budd" just below; while I would like to think that this was done by the author himself, I cannot confirm this. (It may well have been a notation by some cataloguer or even this fellow "Peter," who gifted it to his mum.) Of additional and particular interest (at least to me) is the text on the rear jacket flap, headed "London Calling Overseas," which presents a stirring blurb about the BBC: "Men, women, and even children, risk imprisonment and death to hear broadcasts from London. They are the inhabitants of the occupied countries of Europe. They do so because they have learned that the British Broadcasting Corporation tells them the truth. All over the world, and in many languages, you can listen to the truth from London. [It is] THE VOICE OF FREEDOM." All of Budd's novels are pretty scarce, especially in jacket.
