Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. First Edition. (pictorial boards; no dust jacket, as issued) [a nice clean as-new book]. (B&W photographs) One of several books published by Mrs. Oakie as part of her indefatigable devotion to preserving her late husband's legacy, and a pretty thin affair. Just 128 pages in length, it's only got about 50 pages worth of actual text; purporting to share Jack's "comedy secrets," it's basically a mishmash of anecdotes, with occasional sidebars such as "Jack Oakie's Rule for Comedy." The remainder of the book, honestly, feels like filler. There's a section entitled "Some Jack Oakie Motion Picture Music," which is basically a list of song titles (apparently compiled from Jack's collection of sheet music, a couple items of which are represented by reproductions of their covers), but with no indication whether or not Jack actually performed them. Then there's "Some Jack Oakie Still Pictures," which is exactly that: about 40 pages of not-very-well-reproduced photos, a mixture of scene stills and off-camera shots. And finally a filmography of sorts, which is just an alphabetical list of Jack's films, giving studio and year only, helpfully(?) asterisked to indicate which are available on video cassette. In addition to just being generally thin on content, the whole book is set in a typeface that will make you wonder if you've picked up the Large Print Edition by mistake.
