VD18 14525127. - Interessanter Sammelband mit vier sehr seltenen Schriften über religiöse Ausschreitungen und die Hinrichtung des Bürgermeisters in der polnischen Stadt Torun (dt. Thorn) 1724. - "Bei der Fronleichnamsprozession am 16. Juli 1724, die einen nicht genehmigten Weg nahm, um einen Protest zu provozieren, kam es wie erwartet zu Streitigkeiten zwischen den Jesuitenzöglingen und den Schülern des protestantischen Gymnasiums. Aus diesem Tumult heraus wurde das Jesuitenkloster gestürmt und verwüstet. Die Regierung des polnischen Königs August des Starken führte daraufhin ein Verfahren gegen die Stadt, ließ den Bürgermeister Johann Gottfried Rösner und neun weitere Bürger am 7. Dezember 1724 enthaupten (Thorner Blutgericht) und bestimmte, dass der Magistrat künftig zur Hälfte aus Katholiken bestehen müsse und die Marienkirche den Katholiken zu übergeben sei" (Wikipedia). - Johann Gottfried Rösner (1658-1724) wurde 1703 einer von vier Bürgermeistern der Stadt. "Er war zeitweise turnusmäßig Präsident (vorsitzender Bürgermeister) oder Burggraf (offizieller Vertreter des polnischen Königs), seit 1706 auch Kurator des Gymnasiums. In seine Amtszeit fielen der Nordische Krieg und eine Pestepidemie, die die Stadt schwer beeinträchtigten. Rösner war Kaufmann und betrieb eine private Branntweinbrennerei, die in Konkurrenz zur städtischen stand, weswegen es heftige Zwistigkeiten zwischen einigen Ratsherren und ihm gab. 1724 kam es zum Thorner Blutgericht zwischen protestantischen und katholischen Gymnasiasten in der Stadt, in deren Folge das Jesuitenkloster schwer verwüstet wurde. Rösner schritt nicht ausreichend resolut dagegen ein und wurde daraufhin von den Jesuiten angeklagt und vom Hofgericht in Warschau zum Tode verurteilt. Einen Übertritt zum katholischen Glauben, womit er sein Leben hätte retten können, lehnte er vehement ab. Petitionen und Proteste auch vom preußischen König Friedrich Wilhelm konnten die Hinrichtung mit neun weiteren Bürgern nicht verhindern" (Wikipedia). - Einband teils stärker berieben und angestaubt, stellenweise leicht fleckig und gebräunt, sonst sehr gut erhalten. An interesting collection comprising four very rare writings on religious riots and the execution of the mayor in the Polish city of Torun (German: Thorn) in 1724. - "During the Corpus Christi procession on 16 July 1724, which took an unauthorised route in order to provoke a protest, disputes arose, as expected, between the Jesuit pupils and the students of the Protestant grammar school. Amidst this turmoil, the Jesuit monastery was stormed and ransacked. The government of the Polish King Augustus the Strong subsequently brought proceedings against the city, had the mayor Johann Gottfried Rösner and nine other citizens beheaded on 7 December 1724 (the Torun Blood Court), and decreed that half of the magistrate must henceforth consist of Catholics and that St Mary's Church was to be handed over to the Catholics" (Wikipedia). - Johann Gottfried Rösner (16581724) became one of the town's four mayors in 1703. "He served at various times as president (chief mayor) or burgrave (official representative of the Polish king) on a rotating basis, and from 1706 also as curator of the grammar school. His term of office coincided with the Great Northern War and a plague epidemic, which severely affected the town. Rösner was a merchant and ran a private distillery that competed with the municipal one, which led to fierce disputes between him and some of the councillors. In 1724, the Torun Bloodshed took place between Protestant and Catholic grammar school pupils in the town, as a result of which the Jesuit monastery was severely devastated. Rösner did not intervene with sufficient resolve and was consequently accused by the Jesuits and sentenced to death by the Court of Appeal in Warsaw. He vehemently refused to convert to Catholicism, which would have saved his life. Petitions and protests, including from the Prussian King Frederick William, were unable to prevent his execution along with nine other citizens" (Wikipedia). - Binding partly heavily rubbed and dusty, slightly stained and browned in places, otherwise very well preserved.
