Warren Merrill, a prominent Massachusetts politician (1819 - 1889) who served as Mayor of Cambridge, and who owned an extensive garden cared for by gardener Avery B. Gilbert. The 'Note' states that the rare native ferns were collected in Califor…nia, Colorado, Florida, and other southern states. In addition, Merrill desired to enlarge his collection of ferns "by exchanges" and wanted to establish an informal network of fern collectors. The names of the ferns were derived from Hooker's and Baker's Synopsis (1874 ed) and native varieties from Ferns of North America by Prof. D. C. Ellis, Edward S. [Edward Sylvester Ellis (April 11, 1840 - June 20, 1916) was an American author who was born in Ohio and died at Cliff Island, Maine. A teacher, school administrator, journalist, and the author of hundreds of books and magazine articles that he produced by his name and by a number of noms de plume. Notable fiction stories by Ellis include The Steam Man of the Prairies and Seth Jones, or the Captives of the Frontier. Internationally, Edward S.
