Black and white photographic plates and illustrations throughout. Pages and plates have light tanning and foxing throughout. Rough-cut pages throughout. Slight cracking to gutters causing binding to be loose, however pages remain attached. Pencil inscription to rear free endpaper. Boards have light shelf-wear with corner bumping. Light tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends.

First edition (hardback). 8vo, xii, 238pp. Frontispiece, 48 plates, 71 text illustrations. Original brown cloth, gilt titling to the front board and the spine, top edge gilt. Formerly in a reference library, with a bookplate to the front free endpaper, a shelfmark to the foot of the spine and a stamp to the verso of each plate, and the frontispiece has been taped back in place, but this copy is nonetheless in good condition overall.
