Trade Paperback. Zustand: VERY GOOD. SIGNED and inscribed on the half-title. 206pp. Front wrapper creased, sound and unmarked otherwise. 'This book offers an edition, translation and study of an Arabic source which casts new light on the vicissitudes of the Jewish Messianic movement in 17th century Yemen, and especially on its interaction with the local Muslim authorities. The author, the Muslim scholar Ahmad ibn Nasir ibn 'Abd al-Haqq al-Zaydi, quotes hitherto unknown court-documents and reflects the authentic opinions of the Yemenite ruling elite. . After an introductory discussion of the manuscripts, the author, date and purpose of the text (chapter I) we present a study of the contents of our new text, together with a critical comparison of its data with those known from other (especially Jewish) sources, with special emphasis on problems related to the chronological order of the events (chapter II). An analysis of the changes in the socio-juridical status of the Yemenite Jews, to be observed in our new text and in the additional information provided by Ibn al-Wazir, is given in chapter III. This is followed by an annotated translation of our source (Ahmad ibn N?sir's report), to which a new translation of the relevant passages of Ibn al-Wazir's Tabaq al-halwa is added as an appendix (chapter IV). Finally, we include our edition of Ahmad ibn N?sir's text (chapter V), a reproduction of the Cairo manuscript and a bibliography (list of bibliographical abbreviations).' (From the Introduction).
