En España y en casi todo el mundo estamos viviendo una eclosión de museos de arte moderno o contemporáneo, unas nuevas tipologías que generan un creciente interés por parte de los museólogos, de la misma manera que hace unas décadas los ecomuseos fueron el caballo de batalla favorito de los adalides de la nouvelle muséologie, que renovaron desde posicionamientos progresistas y sociales esta joven disciplina científica. Quienes hoy se identifican con la llamada critical museology comparten esas mismas inquietudes sociales, pero son más descreídos en cuanto a la idea de progreso, inclusive en el campo artístico, tanto si su encarnación museística es el MoMA como otro contramodelo posterior. Más que una triunfal historia lineal de los museos de vanguardia, el hilo discursivo de este libro se estructura en ocho capítulos que marcan los puntos de inflexión histórica, de ruptura, sin renunciar a describir proyectos museísticos que no llegaron a término o que alcanzaron escasa pervivencia.
