Su Atlas de Anatomía, no solo supuso un acontecimiento de enormes repercusiones en la historia de la medicina, sino que a día de hoy sigue siendo uno de los tratados anatómicos más completos que se hayan publicado nunca, y también uno de los más bellamente ilustrados. Bourgery empezó a trabajar en su magnífico atlas en 1830 en colaboración con el ilustrador Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782-1871), un alumno del pintor francés Jacques Louis David. Los primeros volúmenes se publicaron al año siguiente, pero completar el tratado requirió cerca de dos décadas de esfuerzos; Bourgery consiguió completar en vida su magna tarea, pero el último de los ocho volúmenes del tratado no se publicó en su totalidad hasta cinco años después de la muerte de su autor. A few marginal tears repaired, minor dampstaining but very good. Later edition, first published in both Paris and Brussels in 1836, of this set of very large anatomical plates that were intended to be mounted on the walls of dissection rooms. All editions are extremely rare-OCLC does not cite any copies of the 1854 edition. This is the only copy of any edition of this work that we have handled in over 50 years of trading. The work was originally accompanied by a small 20-page pamphlet of text that is not present here. The impressive plates in this atlas reproduce the illustrations in Bourgery and Jacob's Traité complet d'anatomie at a much larger scale than their counterparts in the Traité-roughly half life-size. Some plates were lithographed in Paris; others in Brussels. Plates I and II are devoted to osteology and syndesmology; plates III - VIII to myology and aponeurology; plates IX-XIV to angiology; plates XV-XVII to neurology; plates XVIII-XIX to the digestive system; and plate XX to the reproductive organs. The plates were originally sold separately; uncolored versions were priced at 6 francs and colored versions at 12 francs. Two lithographed broadsides (91.0 x 54.5 cm and 88.0 x 54.5 cm). = A fine and rare work by the French medical doctor Jean-Baptiste Marc Bourgery (1797-1849) and the French painter and lithographer Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782-1871), both better known from their later published Traité complet de l'anatomie de l'homme, comprenant l'anatomie chirurgicale et la médecine opératoire. The current work, fully titled Anatomie élémentaire en 20 planches, avec un texte explicatif à part, formant un manuel complet d'anatomie physiologique, consists of a series of twenty very large anatomical plates, and an additional small explanatory textbook (here not included). From this suite, these are two matching plates, namely Planche 3, Myologie et Aponévrologie - Plan anterieur, or muscles and nerves, frontal, and Planche 5, Myologie Aponévrologie, or muscles and blood vessels seen dorsally. These two plates obviously form a pair, as the view is identical, and the subjects are closely related. A few skilful repairs. Since these plates were meant to be used in medical schools and hospitals, they are usually found well-used, with spotting, creasing, chipping, annotations, stamps, etc., but this set is unusually clean and bright.
