Contents: 1) Wohltat um Wohltat; 2) Blätter aus meinem militärisches Tagebuche; Rettung durch Nord. Quarter calf with 3 raised bands extant is chipped and worn. Boards have considerable wear to corners and paper remains front and rear. Nevertheless the binding is surprisingly firm. Text pages are clean throughout; edges are dyed red. Bookplate of the bibliophile, Fedor von Zobeltitz (1857-1934) is of association interest. Joseph Karl von Train (1787-1850) - a rare title from the oeuvre. Eine überraschend gut erhaltene Kopie. "Zweiter Band" angegeben. Inhalt: 1) Wohltat um Wohltat; 2) Blätter aus meinem politischen Tagebuche; Rettung durch Norden. Viertel Kalb mit 3 erhabenen Bändern vorhanden ist abgebrochen und getragen. Bretter haben erhebliche Abnutzungserscheinungen an den Ecken und Papier bleibt vorne und hinten. Trotzdem ist die Bindung überraschend fest. Textseiten sind durchgehend sauber; Kanten sind rot gefärbt. Das Exlibris des Bibliophilen Fedor von Zobeltitz (1857-1934) ist von Assoziationsinteresse. Contemporary brown marbled wrappers. - (Includes:) "Jenische Sprache". German and Yenish manuscript on bluish paper. 4 ff. of linguistic specimens and translations on 2 bifolia and a single sheet. Folio (215 x 335 mm). The extremely rare first edition, printed for the Royal Bavarian Gendarmerie, of Train's pioneering handbook and dictionary of criminal cant, here preserved together with a contemporary Yenish manuscript supplement. This copy matters particularly for the survival of the accompanying manuscript, which transforms the printed manual into a working witness of actual use within the linguistic milieu it sought to police. - This "continuously valued book of 'scoundrel literature'" (Hayn/G.) was compiled from criminal and court records as well as direct encounters with speakers of the jargon, and was expressly designed for practical investigative use. A German-Yenish and Yenish-German dictionary occupies most of the volume; it is followed by an introduction to secret writing systems, illustrated on plates, and by a scene from "criminal life" in Yenish with German translation. - This first issue was acquired en bloc by the Bavarian police force, which is why it almost never is seen in the trade, and only two institutional copies appear to survive (at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and the New York Public Library). A second edition for public sale appeared in the same year, and a third, with Meissen imprint, in 1833. - Yenisch belongs to the group of Central European cant languages associated with travelling communities in southwest Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, drawing on German, Yiddish, Romani, and criminal slang. In the early 19th century such vocabularies were not merely descriptive curiosities but instruments of surveillance and prosecution. - The accompanying manuscript, written in a not always easily legible individual hand, appears to have been compiled by a police officer as a privately researched addendum to the printed manual. It contains a list of German words and phrases with Yenish translations and a draft German-Yenish letter to a "Lieber Freund", ending with the striking formula: "Wir wollen in Zukunft immer Chochemer Loschen waldibern". As an adjunct to the printed book, this manuscript considerably sharpens the copy's documentary interest. - Wrappers worn at the spine. Lacking 2 leaves in the foreword (pp. VII-X); title-page trimmed along the edges and fully rebacked. Slight browning almost throughout; 4 leaves show ink blotting in the margin, not affecting the text; 2 leaves with a tear of ca. 4 cm. - Manuscript shows occasional slight edge flaws, but generally in good condition, stored loose separately. - Zaunmüller 65. Second edition of this popular dictionary of Yenish, an idiom of vagrants in southwest Germany, Switzerland and Austria, consisting of elements of Yiddish, gypsy elements and the jargon of the criminal underworld. "A continuously valued book of 'scoundrel literature'" (cf. Hayn/G.). - The work is arranged in four sections: a German-Yenish and Yenish-German dictionary, which takes up most of the work, followed by an introduction to underworld ciphers (illustrated by lithographed specimens), and finally a brief dramatic scene in Yenish, with a facing German translation. It was compiled from interviews with criminals and court documents, and was particularly designed for use in criminal investigations. - Rarely seen at auction. The first edition had been bought en bloc by the Bavarian police force, or possibly had been an internal publication only. A third edition appeared in 1833 with a Meissen imprint. - Extremities faintly rubbed. Occasional marginal flaws. - From the library of Albert Treier (1886-1956), a German jurist and avid collector of bookplates, whose valuable reference work on the subject was published posthumously (Redende Exlibris.
