[viii] 308pp. The first edition was privately printed for the author in 1818. Scuffing and wear to the extremities, fraying to base of spine and some creasing and signs of use. Surprisingly a very good copy, strong, internally clean, with some soiling and thumbing to the prelims and some dog-eared pages, also a couple of small neat marginal pencil annotations. Edges untrimmed, superior paper quality. A very pleasing little volume, although Crabtree 286 describes it as "A study that is more philosophical than experimental." Written by a man of keen mind who was rather better known for his works on judicial reform, mesmerism was clearly a source of private fascination. Daloz, aside from recounting some eyewitness testimony and some potted history, is very much interested in the meta of mesmerism and magnetic healing; what it might mean that these abilities and responses exist. It's a rather dense counterpoint to the more usual struggles for credibility or rather detatched accounts of case numbers and treatments. Only a handful of copies in institutions, although interestingly the pagination of this edition differs from the cataloged pagination of copies at the Wellcome Institute for example, although the digitised copy of the book has the pagination found here, so the origin of the recorded pagination seems a little obscure. Investigation suggests that this copy is perhaps re-using the 1818 sheets with cancelled preliminary matter, as the pagination and layout of the 1818 edition matches those found here.…
