I have had this book for some years and was hesitant about listing it because there is a good deal of foxing inside. However, when I realized that it was a scarce book (very few found online) and that all the…photos were present and accounted for (I checked), I decided to go ahead. Please find: On Horseback Through Nigeria or Life and Travels in the Central Sudan by J.D Falconer. This medium-sized hard cover book (6 ¼ x 9 inches, 312 pages plus a fold-out map of the Author s travels) was published by Charles Scribner s Sons of New York dated 1911, and the First Edition. The book is bound in maroon cloth with gilt titles and decorations on cover and spine. The top edge is gilt. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The front and rear boards are clean and bright but the spine is faded. Inside the book is unmarked and as mentioned, all the photos are present. I was pleased to find that although the foxing is quite common and unsightly, it is concentrated towards the front although not really absent towards the rear of the book. The foxing does not affect the many plates. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight, sound and square. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

A first edition of J. D. Falconer's account of his voyages through Nigeria.Bound in publisher's cloth binding. Containing a frontispiece and…thirty-one further black and white plates with a folded map. Collated complete. Nine of the photographs included in the plates are credited to Arthur Longbottom.A Scottish born geologist and geographer, Falconer was stationed in Central Sudan to oversee the official mineral survey in 1904. He later acted as Assistant District Commissioner for Nigeria during the First World War. His second book, The Geology and Geography of Northern Nigeria, was also published in 1911.This edition includes a six page publisher's advertisement for further contemporary travel works. In the publisher's cloth binding. Externally in excellent condition. Minor marks and spotting to boards. Spine and rear joint faded. Evidence of shelf wear and rubbing to extremities, prominent at head of spine where cloth has torn. Book plate and ink inscription to front free end paper. Internally firmly bound.
