Cloth. Zustand: Very good. Presentation copy of a Statistical View Of The United States by J.D.B. DeBow, inscribed by Ohio Senator Salmon P. Chase to his relative, D.H. Chase. (illustrator). First Edition. Octavo, 400pp. Brown cloth, blind stamped with "Senate Documents" on both covers, title stamped in gilt on the spine. General toning throughout, occasional foxing, wear and light rubbing to cloth along the spine. Dampstain along top edge, limited impact to title page and a few subsequent chapters. A few passages about New Hampshire underlined throughout the text. The initials "D.H.C." appear on the front free endpaper. Inscribed in pencil on the second free endpaper: "for D.H. Chase from S.P. Chase." Salmon P. Chase (1808-1873) was a politician and jurist who represented Ohio in the U.S. Senate from 1849 to 1855, and Governor until 1860. He ran for president in 1860, losing the nomination to Abraham Lincoln. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln appointed him Secretary of the Treasury, then Chief Justice of the United States (1864). As Chief Justice, he presided over major Reconstruction-era questions, including the Senate impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson. Signed.

No Binding. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. (C. G. Memminger, Secretary of Treasury; J. D. B. DeBow, General Agent Produce Loan.) REPORT ON THE CONDITION OF GOVERNMENT COTTON, CONTIGUOUS TO THE MISSISSIPPI AND ITS TRIBUTARIES. Treasury Department, C. S. A., Richmond, May 16, 1864. 7p. House of Representatives, May 17, 1864. - Laid on the table and ordered to be printed. (By the Chair.). 7pp, bears the oval "Rebel Archives" stamp (faint, a few letters only are legible); paste-fastened pamphlet with print-block toning, several large flecks from impurities in paperstock, short splits at head and tail of spinefold: a good copy. Parrish & Willingham 2197. P&W present J. D. B. DeBow's printed signature line on p7 as having transposed initial letters. Their text reads, "Signed: J. D. B.D. [sic] DeBow,/ General Agent Produce Loan." but this is erroneous. Excerpt: "Large plantations are abandoned everywhere, and the cotton has been left in sheds. These tumble down or are blown down. Stray cattle destroy the cotton; soldiers, particularly cavalry, strip it of the ropes and bagging, or make use of it for beds" &c &c. Profuse detail, including accounts of fraud, of ineptitude, of panic burning by growers of stored bales (for fear Union troops will find them). Please email with questions or to request photos. This Confederate Imprint is one of more than 100 recently acquired, most with 'Rebel Archives' stamp on the cover, indicating that these were the actual copies seized by the Union Army at the end of the Civil War. A remarkable collection.
