Papierbedingt gebräunt. - The clinical records and the pathological changes, both in the body generally and in the brain, were accordingly studied in 300 consecutive postmortem examinations in one mental hospital. The recorded history of each patient was analysed and a diagnosis established. The post-mortem findings were then tabulated separately and the two sets of information brought together in order to see to what extent varying patterns could be identified in the different clinical groups, firstly in the causes of death and secondly in the cerebral findings. In this way, by means of inter-group comparison based on unselected material, it should be possible to define as objectively as possible the relative importance of structural change, particularly that affecting the brain, in the development and course of the illnesses that end with death in a mental hospital.
