Orig.-Ausgabe ers…chien zuerst 1813 mit dem Titel "Researches into the Physical History of Man" und wurde bis 1847 auf fünf Bände erweitert. - "Prichard beschäftigte sich in seiner vielseitigen Forschungsarbeit mit "den körperlichen Unterscheidungsmerkmalen, durch die verschiedene Menschenrassen gekennzeichnet werden". Als erste Untersuchung dieser Art verfaßte er in Edinburgh seine medizinische Doktorarbeit "De Humani Generis Varietate", deren erweiterte Fassung er im Jahre 1813 unter dem Titel "Researches"; veröffentlichte. Er gelangte zu der Schlußfolgerung, daß die Menschheit ursprünglich schwarz war und daß die Hautfarbe der Weißen sich erst unter dem Einfluß der Zivilisation entwikkelt hätte. In der zweiten, stark erweiterten Auflage der Researches aus dem Jahre 1836 erscheint der ursprüngliche Nachdruck, den er auf die Abstammung weißer Rassen von schwarzen Vorfahren legte, abgeschwächter; jetzt kam er zu dem Schluß, daß "alle Menschenrassen einer Spezies und einer Familie angehören"." (Carter/Muir). - Der englische Arzt und Ethnologe James Cowles Prichard (1786-1848), seit 1845 als Neurologe tätig, führte auch den Begriff "senile Demenz " ein. - Rücken etwas berieben, St.a.T., Textteil stellenweise braunfleckig, gutes vollständiges Exemplar. While the title page refers to this as 'Part the first: Co…mprising convulsive and maniacal affections', this was the only volume of the work ever published.An impressive and important discussion of neurology and mental illness, including much discussion of epilepsy, and informed by author J. C. Prichard's interactions with his own patients at the Bristol Infirmary and at St. Peter's Hospital.This work is important in illustrating that psychiatry and neurology were at this point in time viewed to be a single discipline.Retaining original half title, and with library stamp to page 1.Lacking the two pages of advertisements to the start of the work, and the eight to the rear.This work has been identified as including 'the best early account of epilepsy after Willis [1667]' (Garrison-Morton, A Medical Bibliography 4809). Rebacked, in half calf with marbled paper covered boards, with endpapers renewed. Externally, significant rubbing to binding. Front joint starting, with visible adhesive residue, and with board a touch tender. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned with the odd spot, and with instances of light tide marks to page perimeters. Ink library stamp to head of page 1. It 'contained detailed accounts of the clinical features of the epilepsies including "epileptic delirium" and the first mention of status epilepticus as well as of the post-ictal plegias. It was based on the casebooks and his own patients at the Bristol Infirmary and at St. Peter's Hospital where the other lunatic poor of Bristol, officially called "frenzy patients", had been housed since 1699. It is therefore an important book in the history of neurology and illustrates. that psychiatry and neurology were not then separate as they are today, and organic disturbances of higher cerebral functions fell within the purview of the psychological physician' (Hunter & Macalpine, Diseases of the Nervous System, pp 838-39).
