Researchers have learned that in this approximately 2000-year era the peoples of the Southeast experienced increasing sedentism, population growth, and organizational complexity. At the beginning of the period, people are assumed to have been living in small groups, loosely bound by collective burial rituals. But by the first millennium A.D., some parts of the region had densely packed civic ceremonial centers ruled by hereditary elites. Maize was now the primary food crop. Perhaps most importantly, the ancient animal-focused and hunting-based religion and cosmology were being replaced by solar and warfare iconography, consistent with societies dependent on agriculture, and whose elites were increasingly in competition with one another. This volume synthesizes the research on what happened during this era and how these changes came about while analyzing the period's archaeological record.In gathering the latest research available on the Woodland Period, the editors have included contributions from the full range of specialists working in the field, highlighted major themes, and directed readers to the proper primary sources. Two charming works on British Agriculture and Farming, both privately printed and published between 1939-1947.The His…tory of the Royal Agricultural Society 1839-1939, by Scottish agriculturalist James Anderson Scott Watson, Britain's first ever Professor of Agriculture. Privately published by The Royal Agricultural Society, in 1939. In the publisher's original red cloth, with a frontispiece of George VI, and contains all other thirty-four plates. Collated complete. An inset of royal charters is included. The history is a centenary celebration of the society and their work on rural farming.An Analysis of the Manningford Herd of British Friesians, by farmer George M. Odlum, privately published and printed by Wiltshire Gazette Printing Works in 1947. In the publisher's original red cloth, containing a thirty-three page inset, and twenty-three plates at the rear of the book. Collated complete. A specialist dairy farmer, Odlham was internationally praised for his herd of pedigree Friesians and this work is an in-depth record of his breeding. In the publisher's original red cloth. Externally, Royal is in near excellent condition, with very slight bumping to the head of the spine, and very minor rubbing to the joints. Friesians is smart, with the odd small mark and fading patches to the extremities, heavier to the bottom left of front board. Slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities, and a small chip to middle of spine. End papers are generally bright and clean, with the small odd spot to free end papers of Royal, slightly heavier to end papers of Friesians, with offsetting to free end papers. Slight wear to hinge between front endpapers of Friesian. Internally, firmly bound, with slight wear between leaves pp.202-203 of Friesians. The occasional plate unopened. Pages are bright and clean in Royal, with minimal age toning and mild spotting to half-title leaf. Age toning a little heavier to Friesians, with the rare odd spot to the extremities, and tide marks at the tail of the hinges. Very Good. Various; Various (illustrator). book.
