An early-career novel by Goodwin (1856-1935), a New York-born writer who was a prolific author of historical fiction in the two decades before and after the turn of the 20th century. She was the sister-in-law of utopian novelist Edward Bellamy. The binding is signed "J.A.S." below the gilt decoration on front cover; these initials are attributed to J.A.
