A collection of theoretical texts by Józef Robakowski (b. 1939), one of the seminal figures of the Polish neo-avant-grade, with essays on Polish experimental photography and independent cinema of the 1970s. Illustrated with author photographs, the essays were published by the BWA gallery (Biuro wystaw artystycznych) established in Lublin in 1956, one of the few galleries that promoted contemporary art in the 1970s focusing on formal experiment. A film and media artists, Robakowski was one of the founding members of the famous Workshop of Film Form (1970-1977). In 1978 along with Ma?gorzata Potocka (b. 1953) he also co-founded the Exchange Gallery in their private apartment, in ?ód? The Exchange Gallery hosted events, and exhibitions but also collected art works, mail art, video and ephemera of performances, creating a library and archive of the Polish and international neo-avant-garde movement throughout the 1980s. Today the archive and library assembled at Exchange Gallery comprise one of the largest private collections of East European and international neo-avant-garde in the world. In 2016 the collection was given by Robakowski to the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw for cataloging and display. As of October 2023, not in KVK, OCLC.

Accompanying leaflet for the memorial exhibition in honor of the legend of the ?ód? film school, Wac?aw Antczak (1911-1974), made by the film and media artist Józef Robakowski (b. 1939). A self-taught artist, poet, and lay actor, Antczak was the oldest member of the Film Form Workshop and played in numerous films produced by its members. Organised for the tenth anniversary of the artist's death, the exhibition was held at the STK Gallery in ?ód? in 1984. The brochure includes texts by Antczak and others. One of 300 copies printed. Poster for the landmark action and performance exhibition held at the BWA in Krakow between 13th November - 13th December 1981. Fourth and sixth (final) issue of the periodical affiliated with the Exchange Gallery, which appeared irregularly in 1988-1989. The first issue opened with a manifesto-like text by Józef Robakowski about the ?ód?-based artistic phenomena ("Kultura Zrzuty"). It called for an "autonomous art" free of institutions that could be created "in the forest, on the tram, or in the meat queue." Other articles, by artists such as Zbigniew Warpechowski and Andrzej Ciesielski, provided an overview of independent art in Poland of the 1970s and 1980s, listing galleries such as Partum's Biuro Poezji (Warsaw), Adres Gallery (?ód?), and artistic groupings such as ?ód? Kaliska and the Film Form Workshop. This final issue discusses the 1989 exhibition "Lochy Manhattanu, czyli sztuka innych medów" (The dungeons of Manhattan, or art in other media) and features a photograph of the "skyscrapers." The exhibition, held in May-June 1989 in a section of ?ód? built up with high-rise apartment blocks and jokingly referred to as "Manhattan," was the last major event of the independent art movement in Communist Poland, and enjoyed an atmosphere of unprecedented artistic freedom. The introduction states, 'It is the aim of the exhibition "Visual Texts" to demonstrate all forms of artistic actualization of visualizing a verbal or a quasiverbal text as we have met them during the last ten or fifteen years'. The director of the exhibition, Jozef Robakowski, writes on the inside cover 'I invited an outstanding expert and animator of visual poetry Jirí Valoch from Czechoslovakia. It was his role to prepare the great international exhibition "Visual Texts" in Lublin. The authority of the artist assured a high standard of the exhibition and gave beginning to the collection of works of [sic.] made by authors all over the world. It was the first, planned on a wide scale, exposition/collection of an artistic activity that was demonstrated to people from the socialist countries. The exposition presented in the gallery of ód House of Creative Circles gave a real satisfaction to the society'. The book itself makes for an interesting construction with industrial card boards and various paper stocks. There is some toning to the dust jacket and the first translucent page. The group Warsztat Formy Filmowej (Workshop of Film Form, WFF) was formed by Neo-Avant-Garde visual artists from the Film School of Lodz. Active between 19701977, the WFF was a pioneer of video art in Poland and structural cinema in Central and Eastern Europe. The group refused classical narrative and traditional film media, working instead somewhere between cinematography and contemporary art.
