Nel novembre del 1946 Arnoldo Mondadori scrisse allo storico della letteratura e critico letterario Piero Nardi per avere maggiori informazioni su una «First Lady Chatterley» che l'agente di Lawrence gli aveva proposto. Nardi, già a conoscenza di tre differenti - e fra loro ben diverse - versioni del romanzo, chiese all'editore milanese di ottenere i diritti non solo per la "prima" Lady Chatterley, ma anche per la seconda. Mondadori rispose affermativamente e si attivò immediatamente per ottenere da Frieda Lawrence vedova ed erede del grande scrittore britannico morto nel 1930 entrambi i manoscritti.
