Bought at auction (Reeman Dansie Art Sale December 2022)as by Ivester Lloyd and completely in his style Swiftly-drawn intimate sketches:humour, familiarity and tenderness in the detail. All but the nudes have an illustrator's style. The subjects are unknown, but the woman and child are possibly the artist's wife and son. PENCIL SKETCH:torn-out sketchbook page (230mm x 140mm) of a man in World War I uniform appearing to be dozing in a chair; with a small inset sketch of the man's face smoking a cigarette. DOMESTIC SCENES:three small sketchbook pages (165mm x 100mm) of humorous, affectionate drawings of domestic scenes, featuring the same woman as the nude sketch (possibly Lloyd's wife?) Playing the piano: sitting upright at a piano in a blouse and skirt with a cigarette in her mouth; At Leisure:lounging in an armchair reading the newspaper with with long legs extended and feet resting on the mantelpiece. A young boy is playing with a train set at her side. Feeding the pups: standing hands in apron pockets watching as a mother Beagle allows her pups to eat hungrily from a bowl, with much enthusiastic wagging of little tails. PRINT:one small print clipped from a publication;illustration of beagles hunting, with a caption "For'ard,For'ard!" (110mm x 145mm) /Thomas Ivester-Lloyd (1873 Ð1942) was born in Liverpool. During World War I he saw action in France in 1914 with the Remount Service, and was later commissioned into the British Artillery. The War Office British Empire Exhibition in Wembley contained thirty dioramas of battles in British history painted by Thomas Ivester-Lloyd, however the majority of his work was sporting, and he illustrated the British section of Sir John Buchanan JardineÕs Hounds of the World. He spent most of his life in and around the village of Sherington, where he became Master of the Sherington Foot Beagles. He illustrated a number of books, and became famous for his hound sketches. Very good.
