Printed by National Printing Press, Deira, Dubai. (2), 248, (1), (2)pp errata. Very good with spotting to covers, previous owner's name to the front pastedown (W.J. Bonnell, Dubai 1970), several words neatly underlined in blue ink, and notes to final blanks locating various places (Fujeira, Batina, Hormuz Strait, Musandam, Wadis Hatta & Al Qawr etc). This was possibly Jeremy Bonnell, resident in Dubai in 1970 with Halcrow & Partners whose projects included TOS facilities. Headquartered at RAF Sharjah under British control, the Trucial Oman Levies / Scouts was the first modern Emirati military force (1951-71). Its mandate included calming tribal disputes, closing down slave routes, deterring Saudi annexation, counter-insurgency, and protecting British officials and IPC staff. It supported the Sultan's Armed Forces (SAF) in the Jebel Akhdar and Dhofar Wars, and helped build local forces. It ran an Education Centre, and a Boys' School attended by many of its Arab troops. The authors are unnamed but the 2nd edition credits the Education Centre. It is introduced by the TOS Commander (during 1967-70 this was Colonel K.P.G. (Pat) Ive). With British withdrawal announced in January 1968, it was issued to assist the transition to union and independence, which involved maintaining and re-equipping the TOS as the basis for the Union Defence Force, requiring British Officers and NCOs to communicate with Arab colleagues in their daily work. It predates the SAF's "Elementary Omani Colloquial Arabic" (1974), and is about contemporary with their "How to Speak Awful Arabic" a rough and ready handout of stapled foolscap for use with Arab colleagues and on patrol. It was based on MECAS' English-Arabic Dictionary (1966) "incorporating the words more commonly used in the Trucial States Area". It includes explanatory notes (pp3-6); the Word List presented A-Z in 3 columns for English, Gulf Colloquial, and Written Arabic (pp7-215); thematically arranged sections (pp217-236), and Grammar (pp237-248). Themes include ranks, drill (marching, bayonets, the Bedu Sling etc), greetings, numbers, calendar, countries, and important organisations. Other than the Arab League these organisations are all UN, reflecting the close eye it was keeping on British activities. Worldcat and Library Hub locate one copy between them (OCLC 1472885886: Durham University). The National Army Museum holds another. The second revised UDF edition appeared in 1972 and 1973 (OCLC 917739559: Humboldt Universitat).
