Four rare catalogs of female artists from Yugoslavia, publish…ed by the Salon of the Modern Gallery in Belgrade, founded in 1961. The monographic catalogs of the Salon, elaborately designed by Nikola Masnikovi?, were a unique selling point of this prestigious project, which was launched on the occasion of the first summit of the Non-Aligned Movement and through which the socialist state demonstrated its cultural independence from the Eastern Bloc. The catalogs had a uniform format and a consistently minimalist graphic design language that ran clearly through all volumes. Characteristic is the nearly square format with a clear, eye-catching color or image area on the covers. Due to their clarity, functionality, and careful preparation and execution, the catalogs quickly became a model for many similar publications that appeared throughout Yugoslavia. Because of their detailed biographies, bibliographies, and catalogs of works, the catalogs from the early days of the Salon are important sources on the Yugoslav Neo-Avant-Garde. Of the four catalogs featured here, the one on Jagoda Bui? deserves special mention. The exhibition of 18 monumental spatial textures was the most-visited solo exhibition of 1974 and was accompanied by no fewer than 18 articles in various publications. Bui? is a representative of the so-called Slavic Wave. Her woven works, which broke away from two-dimensionality to create imaginary spaces and abstract landscapes, were exhibited far beyond the borders of Yugoslavia, for example at New York's MoMA in 1969. Starting in 1975, the elaborate and, above all, extensive catalogs were drastically reduced for financial reasons. At the same time, however, the Salon began to compete with the Belgrade Student Cultural Center, where the most radical tendencies of the Neo-Avant-Garde at the time were exhibited. As of July 2025, OCLC lists only four copies of the catalog on Olga Jan?i?; there are no entries for the other catalogs in North America.
