First German edition of Bloch's pioneering study of modern warfare, originally published in Russian in 1898. This copy was inscribed by Bloch to Colonel Rohr on the half-title of volume I: "Herr Oberst Rohr vom Verfasser". A librarian's subsequent annotation records the donation of the set by Rohr's widow two months after the outbreak of the First World War. Bloch (1836-1902), a Polish-born railway financier and economic analyst, applied his statistical methods to an investigation of modern warfare. He argued that improved firearms, artillery, and entrenchments would make decisive offensives increasingly difficult, leading to prolonged stalemate and enormous casualties. The economic disruption of a European war, he warned, could prove ruinous even to the victors. His six-volume study examines land and naval warfare, economic losses, and the prospects for international arbitration. The military historian Michael Howard described the work as "the first work of modern operational analysis", declaring that "nothing written since has equalled it for its combination of rigor and scope" (Howard, p. 41). Only the concluding volume was translated into English, appearing in 1899 as Is War Now Impossible?, with an introductory interview by W. T. Stead. The trench deadlock of the First World War brought Bloch belated recognition. In January 1916 the New York Times hailed him as the "Prophet of Trench Deadlock". H. G. Wells, who acknowledged his own failure to appreciate Bloch's analysis fully, subsequently described him as "the prophet who emerges with the most honour from this war" (Wells, p. 29).
