[vi], 326pp. The Pillow Book is a book of observations and musings recorded by Sei Sh?nagon during her time as court lady to the Empress Consort Fujiwara no Teishi during the 990s and early 1000s in the Heian period of Japan. The work is a collection of essays, anecdotes, poems, and descriptive passages that have little connection to one another, except that they express ideas and whims of Sh?nagon, spurred by moments in her daily life. Ivan Morris (1925-1976) was an English writer, translator and editor in the field of Japanese studies. He gives the first complete English version in Volume I, together with an introduction, and in the present Companion Volume he gives explanatory notes, an index/glossary, genealogical tables, drawings of articles mentioned, maps, and other aids to a full understanding of the text. The book is bound in the original grey cloth covered boards with gold titling against a green background on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with a little very faint damp marking on the spine. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The clipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear with light soiling and light bumping to the top of the spine.
