Soft cover. Zustand: Good. 2nd Edition. Second edition 1936 (the 1st appeared in 1935). Glossy illustrated b/w wraps 45x32cm (folding down into English and Hebrew title panels 17x23cm). Printed in Palestine by Goldberg's Press. 8pp English text including several b/w photos by J. (Shmuel Joseph) Schweig, and a double-page map dated 1935 by Maximilian Romanoff captioned in English. Good or better, with closed tears. This appears to be rare in commerce. The Keren Hayesod was the fundraising arm of the Jewish Agency. It reports that by 30 June 1936, it had raised £5.6M through voluntary taxation, and that its "most important field of activities is that of agricultural colonisation, on which it has expended £1,985,000" (p7). Itzhak Ben-Zwi (Yitzhak Ben Zvi, 1884-1963) at this time served on the Jerusalem City Council, and as President of the Yishuv's shadow governing body the Jewish National Council. He was among the signatories of Israel's Declaration of Independence in 1948, and became Israel's 2nd President during 1952-63. In this work he describes Jerusalem's significance, presents a survey of the city and its people, it communities, history, topography, the old quarters and their expansion, new residential quarters and their development, economic conditions, institutions, and school buildings. The map, 64x45cm, dated 1935, was prepared by the architect and town planner Maximilian Romanoff for the Keren Hayesod. A striking birds-eye view in b/w with some colour highlighting, this shows the location of Zionist several agencies including the Orphan's House, Teacher Training College, Shaare Zedek Hospital, Hebrew Gymnasium, Hadassah Hospital, Palestine Land Development Company, etc etc. Schweig had worked as a photographer for the Jewish National Fund before opening his own workshop, and was the first local photographer to take photos in colour. Those included here in b/w cover various facets of the Old City and modern developments. …

Yitzhak Ben-Zvi (24 November 1884 - 23 April 1963) was a historian, Labor Zionist leader and the longest-serving President of Israel. He was the second President of Israel. He was (with Theodore Herzl) one of the organizers of the first Zionist Congress in Basel in the fall of 1897 where the World Zionist Organization was founded, and the intention to re-establish a Jewish state was announced. Shimshi was the only organizer of the first Zionist Congress to live to see the birth of the modern State of Israel in 1948. In 1952, Ben-Zvi was honored by the first Israeli Knesset (parliament) with the title "Father of the State of Israel". In 1948, Ben-Zvi headed the Institute for the Study of Oriental Jewish Communities in the Middle East, later named the Ben-Zvi Institute (Yad Ben-Zvi) in his honor. The Ben-Zvi Institute occupies Nissim Valero's house. His main field of research was the Jewish communities and sects of Asia and Africa, including the Samaritans and Karaites. This work is the study of three different categories of Jews: Jews belonging to communities that were originally dispersed in Moslem countries; Certain religious sects that consider themselves as belonging to the House of Israel, and certain groups of Jewish extraction who were coerced by their Moslem conquerors into adopting the Moslem faith.…

First edition in English, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in Hebrew, "As a good souvenir to Mr Shlomo Ben Levi-Edmund Rothschild on his visit to Israel with regards I. Ben-Zvi. Jerusalem, 14 second adat Purim (24. 3. 1959)". The recipient was the financier and philanthropist Edmund Leopold de Rothschild (1916-2009), a member of the Rothschild banking dynasty. Rothschild led an investment consortium that signed a 20-million-dollar pipeline deal in Israel in July 1959. The "Shlomo Ben Levi" of the inscription translates as Solomon the son of Levi, his Hebrew name used in religious contexts. Ben-Zvi served as the second president of Israel from 1952 to 1963. The Exiled and the Redeemed, first published in Hebrew in Jerusalem in 1953, charts the lost groups of Jews who were subsumed into Arab cultures in the diaspora, yet who could in future be brought back to the faith and into the state of Israel. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in black. With dust jacket. Cloth a little mottled; unclipped jacket a little rubbed and soiled: a very good copy in very good jacket.…
