In den WarenkorbCouverture rigide. Zustand: Bon. Edition originale. Paris, Panckoucke, 1819 ; 1 vol. in-8 (20.5 x 12 cm), (4), 568 pp., 3 planches h.t. REFERENCES: Mudry A : In Reference to Evolution of Eustachian Tube Surgery (Letter to the Editor), The laryngoscope, 2012, 939-940: "Saissy was probably the first, and not Kramer, to insert a piece of catgut as bougie in the Eustachian tube as early as 1819" ; et pour la parution en livre : Garrison & Morton, 3365 ; Politzer A : History of otology, pp. 282-284 : "Saissy's work on the diseases of the inner ear undoubtedly is among the best of the period. " ; Stevenson & Guthrie : History of Oto-Laryngology p. 59 ; Weir N : Otolaryngology : an illustrated history, pp. 63-64 ; Heirs of Hippocrates, 1146 (édition américaine).

First edition. In publisher's blue blank wrappers. [4] 85 [1] p. A rare first edition of Itard's 1807 Rapport, detailing the educational progress of the "wild boy" of Aveyron and pioneering insights into child development. This rare first edition pamphlet is the second of two key works by Jean Itard on the "wild boy" of Aveyron, Victor, who was discovered living in isolation in the French countryside at the end of the 18th century. Jean Itard, a pioneering physician, was tasked with educating Victor, who had spent most of his early years outside human society. The Rapport (written in 1806) provides a detailed update on Victor's development, focusing on advancements in his sensory functions, emotional responses, and intellectual abilities after several years of education. Itard outlines his methods and observations, demonstrating that while Victor's development was slow, significant progress was made, especially in his sensory awareness and emotional interactions. The work is grounded in Enlightenment ideals, emphasizing reason, human improvement, and the transformative power of education. Itard's approach to Victor reflects the belief that environment and education shape individuals. His methods laid the foundation for modern pedagogy, viewing education not merely as instruction but as a means to unlock an individual's full potential. Itard's work also pioneered early psychological insights into child development. In contrast to Itard's first pamphlet, De l'éducation d'un homme sauvage, ou Des premiers développements physiques et moraux du jeune sauvage de l'Aveyron (1801), which focused on initial educational strategies and the theoretical aspects of Victor's case, the Rapport is more empirical, offering concrete evidence of Victor's development. Itard evaluates his methods, which ranged from sensory stimulation to intellectual tasks, reflecting on the challenges and outcomes of these interventions. A significant work in the history of psychology and education, building on the foundational ideas of Itard's first report and offering valuable insights into the development of an isolated child. Itard's work is now recognized as an early milestone in the study of human development and pedagogy, influencing later developments in both psychology and educational theory. The case of Victor also inspired François Truffaut's 1969 film L'Enfant sauvage, further cementing its cultural significance. This 1807 Rapport is rarer than the first pamphlet of 1801, with Rare Book Hub reporting only one sale in the last 20 years. . Untrimmed. Wrappers worn, torn at the rear, and partly missing at the spine. Some occasional foxing. Pages chipped and somewhat dog-eared. Otherwise in very good condition. In publisher's blue blank wrappers.…

In den WarenkorbSmall 8vo, pp. 148, (4) adverts, stipple-engraved frontispiece portrait. Good modern half calf antique, uncut. Short tear in fore edge margin of last text leaf just touching two letters neatly repaired, but a nice copy. Old ink stamp in margin of pp. 6?7, blind library stamp on frontispiece, lower corner of title and two leaves at end, brief cataloguing note dated 1909 on blank recto of frontispiece with slight show-through, very faint withdrawn stamp on verso of title. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. A pupil of Pinel, Itard attempted to educate a young ?wild? boy, who had lived since infancy entirely apart from human contact, and who had been found living in the woods near Aveyron. Itard?s methods were based on Condillac?s analytical approach to the acquisition of knowledge, which had been used with success in teaching deaf-mutes. However in adapting this approach, Itard created an entirely new system of pedagogy which has profoundly influenced modern educational methods. Itard?s methods were adopted by his student Édouard Séguin, who applied them successfully to educating the mentally retarded, and by Maria Montessori, who applied them to childhood education in general. The optimism which Itard displayed in this first report of this extraordinary event was not borne out, and in his second report of 1807 he was forced to conclude that the boy was incapable of learning speech, an irreversible result of prolonged isolation during a crucial period of his early childhood. See G&M 4969.1 and Norman Catalogue 1144 (the first edition, in French, of 1801). This English translation, by Nogent, is extremely scarce. Much has been written on this event, but a particularly good account is Harlan Lane's The Wild Boy of Aveyron, 1977.…
