Exemplaire ayant appartenu (ex-libris manuscrit daté de janvier 1865) à Issac Demole, traducteur du « Monde primitif de la Suisse », d'Oswald Heer (naturaliste et explorateur suisse), dont il fut un ardent admirateur. En octobre 1858, Henry Russell (1834-1909), quitta sa famille pour un périple autour du monde. Son plan de voyage était le suivant : gagner Saint-Pétersbourg et Moscou afin de prendre la route de la Sibérie orientale pour arriver à Pékin par la Mongolie. Des steppes mongoles, Russell entreprit la redoutable traversée du désert de Gobi en carriole, franchit la Grande Muraille et, le 1er mars il pénétra dans la ville de Pékin. Après un bref contact à Hakodate (23 juin), ville portuaire du Japon (île d'Hokkaido), une canonnière russe le débarqua à Shanghai d'où il poursuivit son voyage par Hong-Kong, l'Australie et la Nouvelle-Zélande. Ayant renoncé à son tour du monde, Russell visita l'Inde et l'Himalaya (cette variante imprévue deviendra la partie la plus importante et la plus originale de son voyage), durant une année. De retour en Europe par l'Ouest, notre globe-trotteur fit escale au Caire et à Constantinople. À partir de 1861, Russell se consacra à l'exploration et à la conquête des Pyrénées dont il fut l'un des pionniers. FIRST EDITION. VERY NICE COPY.
