Leather dry and scuffed, label chipped, corners worn, contents and book block very good. Both scarce.

Quarter Leather. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. Second Edition. 58 pp. plus 3 pp preface. Second edition "With many additions and Emendations, which the Author has found necessary in his long Course of teaching Hebrew." Hand-sewn half leather over marbled paper-covered boards. Paper on front board is attached at the leather leam but nearly completely detached from from the board and a great deal is missing and all is faded and worn. The paper on the rear board is mostly present but badly worn and faded with significant chips and missing spots. Binding is very tight. Front free end paper has a large chip. Ink inscription on front paste down: "John Folcy His Book 1758." and another owner's name on first free end paper. The text block is very good with remarkably little soiling and foxing. All text is clear and legible. A few handwritten marginal notes not affecting text. Very scarce in any edition. Size: 5" x 8". Book.

Three-quarter calf with marbled boards, antique style. xxiii, (1), 269, (1, errata), (2, pub. ad) pp. Seven folding engraved plates. A few minor brown stains; but, a very good, large copy. Israel Lyons, a child prodigy, was patronised by Sir Joseph Banks and Robert Smith. To the latter he dedicated his first book (written at the age 19), 'A treatise of fluxions'. He taught botany at Oxford (1762-63), was a computer to the Board of Longitude (1764-67), and astronomer to Captain Phipps' polar expedition (1773). Lyons was preparing a complete edition of Halley's works when his career was cut short by measles. A 13-page list of subscribers appears in the preliminaries, there he also notes his reliance on Cotes' approach. Charles Hutton in his 'Mathematical Dictionary' comments: "a respectable mathematician and botanist. In, 1758, he obtained much celebrity by publishing 'A Treatise on Fluxions' . he received frequent presents from the Board of Longitude for his own inventions." F.
