Irving (1877-1969), englischer Bergsteiger, Schriftsteller und Lehrer, war alpiner Mentor und Seilpartner von G.H.L. Mallory (1886-1924). Unter dem Originaltitel "The romance of mountaineering" bereits 1935 in London erschienen, war eine Veröffentlichung der deutschen Übersetzung dieses alpinhistorischen Werkes erst nach dem 2. Weltkrieg möglich. In der Einleitung äußert sich Irving folgendermaßen: "Zweierlei war meine Absicht: Einen Abriß der Geschichte des Bergsteigens zu schreiben, und die Rolle zu schildern, die der Mensch in den Bergen gespielt hat".
