From the Sylvia and Robert Lynd papers. Scarce: no copy on JISC, but in NLI. 16pp, 12mo. Stitched. No wraps. The outer covers spotted, and the back cover grubby, otherwise in good condition, lightly aged. One vertical fold. The author's position, supported with statistical analysis, is that 'The present position is indefensible as it stands; and it is becoming worse. But it is a logical and an absolutely legal consequence of the financial arrangements of the Act of Union, 1800, which made the United Parliament responsible for expenditure in Ireland, and of the Act of 1816 which consolidated the revenues of the two countries.' Ends with page-long appendix on 'The Present "Taxable Capacity" of Ireland'. This paper is said to have been to the British Association in Portsmouth in 1911, but it is not stated therein.

In fair condition, a trifle worn and discoloured, with one inky thumbprint (not over text) and a kink to one corner. Addressed by Fisher to 'Miss Mayra [sic] Lynd / 5 Keats Grove / Hampstead / NW.' Signed by Fisher with initials 'H F'. Reads: 'What charming verses! You might as easily have replied otherwise eg / Hola! un gant! / Bonnet rouges en avant! / A la Bourgeoisie / [?] choisie / Aux capitalistes / Farceurs, fumistes / [?] un gant de [?] / etc etc / H F'. The recipient writes the following lengthwise on the address side: 'H. A. L. Fisher, to whom I was a temporary daughter or niece at New College (while I was a Home-Student 1931-4) had urged me in verse not to cut off my long hair & I had replied "The hair remains - / "The virtue & the [bun?]" &c / & had gone on to ask him for a quote in praise of "The Bible to be read as Literature" which Heinemann were about to publish. No, that must have been after 1934. / M. Gaster 1987 / I must have left a glove behind at Thursby & written a verse.'.

'Reprinted by Permission' on title-page, and 'First published in the "St James Gazette."' on first page of text, which is headed 'Reminiscences and Reflections | (Revised).' Begins: 'It is my privilege to have been born in Ireland. [.] The lighthouses on the Irish coast - models of cleanliness and good order in a country not famous for either - are known to have been objects of special interest to me. [.]' He considers that 'Liberal England and Liberal Scotland' are 'fouled in the meshes of one perverted intellect. The plainest dictates of political morality set at nought - consistency, manhood, truth, thrown to the winds - "lies and hypocrisy," sown broadcast, accepted in their stead.' Scarce.

Two pages, 12mo, bifolium, aged but good condition. Text: "I have rec[eive]d the enclosed information from St Ives. I should be obliged to the Govt. if they would place at my Disposal this Office. | However do not let me stand if the way of any object of the Govt beyong requesting that they will not dispose of the employment in favour of any Cornish Connection [against?] my application, as it would be the means of [implying?] my [or any][?] with the [Boro[ough?]." See Image of second page. The unknown recioient has docketed the last page with the name of the writer, the date, a summary of the content, and the date of his reply (11th Feb.). Note: A fascinating Wikipedia entry includes the information that he was MP for St Ives in 1830, and a friend of Thomas Moore and Lord Byron. Also his "dissipation".
