Se trataba del Guía ilustrada de monstruos y fantasmas de Japón y no era un libro propiamente dicho, sino una recopilación de xilografías, la primera de la que se tiene constancia, del abundante universo de y?kai y y?rei que habitan en el imaginario colectivo japonés. A pesar de la complejidad del proyecto, decidimos publicarlo y es, en la actualidad, uno de los best seller de la editorial. El libro de Toriyama nos convenció de que teníamos que arriesgar, ser una editorial diferente, hacer las cosas de otra manera y hacerlas a nuestra forma. Publicar libros que tal vez no sean para todo el mundo, o tal vez sí, quien sabe, pero libros que nadie más se atreve a editar. Rarezas concebidas solo para paladares muy exquisitos que, si la fortuna nos acompaña, son muchos más de los que pensábamos inicialmente. Así surgió la idea de traducir y publicar Cómo dibujar manga, un libro tan diferente y especial para nosotros como lo fue la Guía ilustrada de monstruos y fantasmas. Introductor del cómic estadounidense en Japón, fundador de la Asociación del Manga (1915), principal impulsor de la industria del cómic japonés y aclamado maestro, Ippei Okamoto mostró el camino a futuros dibujantes que alcanzarían posteriormente gran fama mundial. Su estilo de dibujo de trazo sencillo y caricaturesco ayudó a popularizar enormemente su obra y es considerado hoy en día, como uno de los mangakas fundamentales y más influyentes de la historia de Japón. Sin su legado, autores mundialmente famosos como Osamu Tezuka, Naoki Usawara o Jiro Taniguchi no habrían sido posible. 5 colour manga postcards, 9 x 15 cm, in slightly foxed original envelope. Postcards are all in very good condition. This set of manga postcards were published in1933 by Nippon Life Insurance Company to promote the benefits of life insurance. Nippon Life Insurance Company was established in Osaka in 1889. Instead of presenting figures and tables, each manga tries to illustrate the sense of reassurance people would experience when they buy this company's insurance. For example, a manga by Okamoto Ippei, a famous manga illustrator in the pre-war Japan, depicts a "Family Boat" where young and old members each wear a lifebelt represent their insurance policy while sailing. Its caption says that a insurance policy is a rescue buoy for life, which would make people feel peaceful even on the roughest of seas. Another card features a young attractive geisha sitting coquettishly at home is an advertisement for an old age insurance policy. The text assures the viewer that their policy will be paid back in full when the policy matures. The couple plan to use the money to fund the granddaughter's honeymoon trip and their own holiday, anticipating that they would live long enough to receive the matured fund.

Two scrolls, each over 30 feet long and 10â high. The scroll set was done in some 250 - 300 copies by 18 members of the Tokyo Manga Association (Tokyo Manga Kai æ±äº 漫ç"»ä¼), each set hand painted. It would appear that the trip upon which the set was based took place in 1920-21 and the paintings must have been finished soon after. The inventory of artists involved include some famous names: Mizushima NiÅ æ° å ç¾ä¿å , KondÅ KÅichiro è¿'è¤æµ ä è , Okamoto Ippei å ¡æ ä å , Maekawa Sempan åå åå and Hiratsuka Unâichi å å¡ éä , among others. The Great Earthquake must have destroyed quite a few and the war many more. Now the set appears infrequently in the market. Housed in a wooden box inscribed on the inside of the cover, with hanko (by artist KÅichiro KondÅ è¿'è¤æµ ä è ?). Our copy has scant foxing and is quite well painted. A very nice example of this genre of hand-painted multiples.
