In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Very Good. A very early Intourist brochure promoting the Georgian Military Highway to foreign tourists. Printed in the USSR, Vneshtorgisdat, Moscow. Card wraps 11x21cm with a strikingly designed wraparound image of a peasant woman in a mountainous landscape. This contains a (12)pp concertina folded sheet wit…h English text and 12 green tinted captioned photos. Very good with a very small chip to the lower spine (impacting on the inner sheet but not on content), lightly tanned, neatly folded with a couple of closed fold tears. This is undated but after 1929 when Intourist was founded, and apparently before WW2. (The latest date referenced in the text is to completion of the Lenin Hydro-Electric Station in 1927). The list of Representatives and Agents in the back shows Intourist had an extensive network by this time, across Europe including Germany, and beyond including Turkey, Persia, Palestine, South Africa, Japan, Uruguay and the US, with representation by "All Travel Agents and Steamship Companies of the World". The opening promotes the Highway as "one of the most picturesque and magnificent corners of the world sung by many poets, depicted in thousands of paintings, yet all this becomes pale fancy before the grandeur of the reality". The history of its construction notes that "Tsarist imperialism built this road for the better enslavement of the Caucasian people", and that it was built by the army and forced labour. There follows a detailed description of the route itself, with historical context, and comments on dwellings, geography, those who use the road, accidents etc. The photos show mountain dwellings, Khevsur Village, the summit of Kazbek, mountain views and sections of road, a Tiflis street, a native shepherd, and a 104 year old kolkhoznik with his son. Worldcat and Library Hub record a similar brochure with insufficient detail to confirm if it is the same one (OCLC 1420980766: UCL, University of Chicago, University of Melbourne).
