According to Russell's entry in the Oxford DNB, while reporting on the Civil War, he was described by one American newspaper as 'the most famous newspaper correspondent the world has ever seen'. The inscription on his memorial in St Paul's Cathedral calls him ''the first and greatest of War Correspondents'. He coined the phrase 'thin red line', was instrumental in the sending of Florence Nightingale to the Crimea, and is said to have written the report that inspired Tennyson to write 'The Charge of the Light Brigade'. Like Broadley (whose omission from the DNB is as scandalous as his career), Russell was an active freemason. 2pp, 12mo. In trimmed windowpane mount. He describes the specifications he requires before noting that M. de Blonetz ma dit ce que j'ai entendu avec plaisir que vous avez garde des souvenirs aimables de moi depuis cet temp terrible 70. 71'. In a postscript he expresses anxiety that 'il y aura une grande foule à St Germain le lundi pour les courses'. It may be that Russell attended the racing with the future King Edward VII: he was, as the Oxford DNB states, 'a member of the Prince of Wales's circle, though his relationship with the prince fluctuated, and he deplored the depravity and obscenity of some of his set'.…

3pp., 4to. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed by Brett-James in pencil at the head of the first page to 'Lt Gen Sir Brian Horrocks' and with one manuscript correction. The letter begins: 'I do want to say how interesting and worthwhile I found the broadcast discussion last Sunday evening about the factors which make a good division. All that was said was true and most stimulating, but there are a few points which I should like to add. I served for three years with the 5th Indian Division and had the privilege of writing the Division's history after the war.' He discusses the elements of 'common nationality' and 'tradition and reputation'. On the later subject he recalls 'walking into a canteen the day the Division arrived in the Arakan, its arrival a secret still; we had orders to disguise who we were. The officer in charge of the canteen said at once to us: "I don't need to ask who you chaps are. The 5th Indian Division, I reckon." | We looked duly puzzled at this accurate guess, and he went on: "Nobody else out here wears the Africa Star." | I have not forgotten our pride at this incident.' Another factor discussed is 'the contrbution of the Divisional commander himself to the spirit of the Division'. He remarks: 'I have never forgotten the impatient, desperate, and even illegal efforts made by all ranks, British and Indian, to get back to the Division from hospital and reinforcement camp: they felt that the Division was a home from home in a very real sense.' He concludes: 'Speaking personally, I shall always be thankful that a letter came round to the L of C unit I was with in Syria, asking for volunteers to serve with Indian formations in the Middle East. To have fought with any division would have been better than life in a comparative backwater, and to have served in one of the very very few to fight the Italians, Germans and Japanese (I only know of the 9th Australian and the 7th Armoured Brigade who also did, but there were doubtless one or two others) was a source of still greater satisfaction and pride.'.…

Begins: 'My dear Maclean | I have it not in my heart to put forward an excuse for very long silence, beyond an amount of employment the like of which I have never had thrown upon me before, for many years.' He hopes to see him, but leaves that night 'for the North on a tour of inspection'. He describes his movements: 'I go first to Keir near Dumblane [sic] for a couple of days from thence to Fort George where I may be detained by my duties for two days, and from there back to Keir from which point I shall visit the Depôts, and Depôt Battns. within reach.' After discussing possible arrangements for a visit he writes: 'I am ordered to hasten back from the North to inspect the Depot Battns. just formed in England and in Jersey before the Winter is farther advanced'. He 'took Mr. Rolston to the Horse Guards. - I found that no influence or interest could obtain the enrolment of his name on the list of Candidates for a Commission by purchase, he being passed the age of 18 before he made his application. The Gentleman to whom I presented him, is a very old friend of mine. As I told him how much interested I was in behalf of your Young friend he suggested that Mrs. Rolston should apply for a Commission by purchase in a Colonial Corps of which there are 5'. He lists the corps, observing of the West Indies that it is a place 'in which you and I passed so many Years of our life', and 'not always unhealthy'. 'By a sacrifice of a little money an exchange could be effected without much difficulty into a Regt. of the Line'. The final page concludes: 'However your Young friend did not deem it advisable to make application for an appt. to any of these Corps'.…

Dustjacket. 187pp. Strong and tight, but visibly sunned to spine and edges of binding, and a little bumped to the head of the spine. The priceclipped dustjacket is similarly sunned to the spine, and has some light marginal wear, but shows very well. A very good, presentable copy. Internally clean, with some annotation and emphasis to the text from an informed reader, presumably Angus Thurmer. There is a 2 page letter from Major General Lunt, dated January 1971 on Ministry of Defense notepaper, to Angus Thurmer at the US Embassy in New Delhi, discussing the book and the editing work and apprising Mr. Thurmer of his current status. Major General Lunt CBE had a prominent and successful career in the British Military, spending a significant part of his career in India, including a stint as Military Adviser to the High Commission, there is a note on the title page to the effect that the book's attentive reader played Polo with Lunt whilst he was stationed in Delhi. The first edition of "From Sepoy to Subedar" was published in 1873, then languished forgotten for almost a century until Major General Lunt, in his role as accomplished "Old India Hand" decided a new edition was called for. Primary source material for the period from native Indians, is relatively thin on the ground, spanning as it does Subedar Ram's memories of the Afghan Wars (the first two), the retreat from Khabul, the subsequent trials and tribulations of a soldier's life, and the post-"mutiny" changes to the leadership and administration of India and how badly that went. A fascinating account, which should be ranked alongside "Confessions of a Thug", and Lady Florentia Sale's Journal as insights (with all faults) into the nature of life in and under the British Raj.…

This poem is said to be an earlier work by 'A Tommy', the pseudonymous author of the collection 'If I Goes West', published in London by Harrap in 1918. WorldCat has no entries to support a second claim: that the present poem was published in 1917, with the subtitle 'Verses written by a "Tommy" who has fought, suffered and triumphed in Mesopotamia, and is still on active service there'. While there is no indication that the poem has ever been published in its entirety, extracts from it appeared in 'The Bystander', 27 November 1916; and 'The Near East', 6 July 1917; the latter, headed 'An Alphabet from Mesopotamia', being preceded by the following: 'A member of our Fighting Forces in Mesopotamia has composed some verses, which he entitles " The Alphabet of Mesopotamia." Through the kindness of a correspondent we are allowed to reproduce here some specimens'. There may also be a reference in Catherine W. Reilly's 1978 bibliography 'English Poetry of the First World War'. Duplicated typescript titled 'ALPHABET OF MESOPOTAMIA.' 2pp, foolscap 8vo. Text complete on two leaves of air mail paper, glued together. Apparently contemporary, and with the look of an item that has been handed around the mess room. Twenty-six four-line stanzas: one for each letter of the alphabet, apart from a joint stanza for S and T, and ending with an 'ENVOI'. The first stanza reads: ' "A" Was an apple that grew so they say | In the Garden of Eden down Qurnah way | Till Eve came along and ate it one day | And got thrown out of Mesopotamia.' The poem includes the following stanzas: ' "F" Stands for Fritz who flies in the sky | To bring down the brute we've many a try | But the shells that we shoot seem to all pass him by | And fall --- on Mesopotamia.', ' "J" Is the jam with the label that lies | And states that in Paris it won the first prize | But out here we use it for catching the flies | That swarm in Mesopotamia.', ' "U" Is the Lake we call Umm-el-Brahm | And guards our flanks from all possible karm [sic] | And waters Gorringe's Barley Farm | In the middle of Mesopotamia.', ' "V" Is the Victory we won at Dujailah | I heard of it first from a friend who's a sailor | Who read it in Reuter's on board a mahela | On the Tigris in Mesopotamia.', ' "W" Stands for the wonder and pain | With which we regard the infirm and insane | Old Indian Generals who guide the campaign | Which we're waging in Mesopotamia.', ' "Y" Is the yearning we feel every day | For a passage to Basra and thence to Bombay | If we get there we'll see that we stay right away | From this wilderness - Mesopotamia.'.…

Shebbeare published altogether seven letters, after which he was tried for libel and imprisoned. - BOUND WITH: 2. Title, 80 pp. Rare collection of letters about Anglo-French relations during the differences concerning the colonies of British America and those of New France. Online libraries attibute the work to Edme Jacques Genet (1726-1781) but that could be a misunderstanding due to his series of nine volumes published in the same year with a very similar title. The letters here are all supposedly written from London in december 1756. The first deals with claims by John Shebbeare in the French edition of "Le Peuple Instruit", the second with the role of the British ministers, the third with the militias in America and the fourth with Admiral Byng (John Byng; 1704-1757) who was court-martialled and sentenced to death after the unsuccessful Battle of Minorca. - The anonymous author quotes several British documents and seems well informed about the political scene. Amherst writes to Bradstreet: "I have at last obtained a copy of Governor Nicolls's grant to the Commanding officer at Albany, which appears to be very full and I have laid it before a lawyer for his opinion thereon, which when I receive it I shall acquaint you of." The grant in question would seem to relate to Amherst's push to settle upstate New York. With the French and Indian War effectively over, and the threat of Native American attacks on the frontier much lessened, Amherst encouraged Governor Colden of New York to issue a proclamation to open the upper Mohawk Valley to settlers. In addition, Amherst had claimed 10,000 acres of Native American land near Niagara to be given to his officers, i.e. part of a tract originally ceded to the Iroquis in 1726. The merchants of Albany, whose livlihood depended on the fur trade with Native Americans in the region, objected and petitioned the Privy Council and Lords of Trade to stop the territorial expansion lest it trigger new distubances on the frontier. This evenutually led in part to the Proclamation of 1763.…

A remarkable 1758/1781 idiosyncratically engraved map offering a uniquely French perspective on the French and Indian War (1754 - 1763). It is based on the first-hand experiences of French engineer Pierre Pouchot de Maupas. A Closer Look The map covers the primary American theater of the war, extending from just west of Fort Duquesne (Pittsburgh) in western Pennsylvania to New York City and New Jersey, and from the Delaware Bay to Montreal, illustrating the full course of the Hudson and St. Lawrence Rivers. In a letter to the Marshal de Belle-Isle, dated Montreal, April 14, 1758, Pouchot describes this very map, I have handed to the Marquis de Vaudreuil, a map and memoir, on the subject of the French and English frontiers which I have drawn up on the best informations I have been able to procure, during my sojourn at Niagara. I have laid down in my voyages, the course of the river from Montreal, Lake Ontario as far as Lake Eire; therefore it has an appearance of truth which correctly represents the country and is not contained in any other maps. As I have not been on the English frontier, I laid that down according to their best maps, which I again corrected on such reliable information as I have obtained. It is in sufficient detail however, to show the interest we ought to take to prevent the English interposing obstacles in the way of the Iroquois and Loups, who form a barrier. That country, my Lord, would be well worth being seen by experienced eyes, which has not yet been the case; the well known carrying place of Niagara is an evident proof. The most recent accounts thereof, describe it as the most rugged of Alps, whilst 'tis only a rise of ground, a little more elevated that that of Bellvue. Below and above are very fine plains, as can be seen on my map. Pouchot's letter defines the map as having been drawn in America prior to 1758, during the French and Indian War. It is unclear if it was engraved or printed in America, but the style overall is idiosyncratic, suggesting an informal hand, as will be discussed later. The Theater of War through French Eyes Pouchot was a military engineer whose specialization in fortifications was critical to the French war effort. During the course of the war, he was dispatched throughout the region to shore up defenses and manage siege works. Not only was he present during many of the most significant battles, but he was also captured twice and sent to New York as a prisoner of war - where he earned the respect of his British captors and was treated as a gentleman. As such, this map offers a remarkable contemporaneous (1755 - 1759) overview of the theater of war as the well-educated and well-traveled French engineer understood it. Emphasis is given to inland transportation networks, including roads and navigable riverways, as well as to fortifications, all of which would have been essential to the French war effort. Among the forts noted are Duquesne (Pittsburgh), with the location where the French clashed with George Washington in 1754 marked nearby by crossed swords. Other forts identified include Fort Chougen (Oswego), Fort Niagara, Fort Presque Isle, Fort Cumberland, Ft. La Presentation, Ft. Levis, Fort Chambly, Ft. St. Jean, Fort Carillon, Fort St. Frederic, Ft. William Henry, Fort George, Ft. Hunter, and others. Curious Manuscript Annotations Several finely executed red-inked manuscript annotations are evident on all surviving examples of this map. These refer to Pouchot's travels along the Saint Lawrence. Starting near Montreal, numbered indicators illustrate Pouchot's journey. En route, he visits the Mississauga Indian island village of Toniata (Grenadier Island), as well as the small river islands identified here as I. au Citron and I. au Cochis. Confidential document from the British Indian Army's Sinai and Palestine campaign during World War I: a report on operations of the 5th Cavalry Division prepared by the commander Henry Macandrew (1866-1919), covering the events of September and October 1918. It includes operations in Nazareth, the capture of Acre and Haifa (23 September) and Damascus (1 October), along with the advance from Homs to Aleppo, and the occupation of the latter (26 October): "The road is little more than a fairweather track, very rocky in places, but improved after passing Seraikin. No running water was encountered until Khan Tuman but well water and cisterns were plentiful at each stage. Grain, meat and bread were requisitioned easily, except at Maarit en Naaman where certain sections of the inhabitants displayed covert hostility. Groceries, petrol and some grain reached the troops daily by lorry. Meanwhile the Sherifian Forces hat been advancing up the railway route driving small bodies of Turks in front of them. On the 25th inst. they had moved to the East of Aleppo ready to attack the town from that flank in co-operation with us on the 26th. They, with the assistance of Arabs in the town, gained entrance into Aleppo on the night of the 25th/26th, after considerable fighting in which the Turks suffered heavy casualties". - The report concludes with a statement of 5th Cavalry Division casualties suffered from 19 September to 31 October, including 39 killed, 160 wounded, 9 missing, and 1334 sick persons, noting that "many shows as sick have since rejoined the Division" (p. 9). - The 5th Cavalry Division emerged on 22 July 1918 from the 2nd Mounted Division that served as part of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force in Palestine. Sheet. Zustand: Very Good. One page manuscript oblong octavo. John Rowe (1715-1787) was a property developer and merchant in 18th century Boston., Massachusetts. As a merchant, John Rowe's most famous cargo was the tea that played a starring role in the Boston Tea Party. Rowe was evidently a very active smuggler, avoiding British trade regulations by trading with forbidden ports. He joined protest against tightening restrictions of colonial trade, and helped incite the anti-Stamp Act Riot in 1765. During the era of the American Revolution, Rowe avoided commitment to either side, and instead looked out after his business interest. Rowe was the owner of one of the tea ships, the Eleonor, involved in the Boston Tea Party. According to some accounts, at the Old South Meeting House before the Tea Party, he uttered the famous words, "perhaps salt water and tea will mix tonight". That incident remains an iconic event of American history, and other political protests often refer to it. John Rowe's brother Jacob was working in Canada in 1760, as Commissary of Provisions of his Majesty's detachment under General Murray, which could explain that operational link between Montreal and Boston during the French & Indian War. Nicolas Cox (1724-1794) was involved with James Wolfe in the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, and later became in 1775 Lieutenant Governor of Gaspésie region in Quebec until his death.
