Thesaurus Paroemiarum Germanico-Iuridicarum, Teutsch-Juristischer-Sprichworter-Schatz, In quo Mille et Quod Excurrit Germanorum Dicteria, Cum Primis Iuris, Recensentur, Et Quidem Eius Centuria Prima [-Decima]. Leipzig: Typis Joh. Casp. Mulleri [Parts I, IV, V], 1716; Leipzig: Apud Thomae Fritsch [Parts II-III], 1715; Augsburg: Apud David Raimund Merz & Joh. Jacob Mayer [Parts VI-X], 1723-1725. Ten parts in one volume. Octavo (165 x 102 mm). [Collation/Pagination details, e.g., 984, [24] pp.] Continuous pagination. Ten parts, each with a distinct title page, 100 numbered entries, table of contents, and index. Complete. Part I is the second edition; Parts II-X are the first and only editions. Binding: 19th-century full morocco, signed by Leighton. Boards framed in blind; blind-stamped coat of arms of William Stirling-Maxwell to upper board, blind-stamped cipher to lower board. Spine with raised bands and gilt-lettered title. Edges dynamically stained in alternating blocks of red and yellow, serving as a functional visual index to distinguish the ten individual parts. Condition: Very Good. Rubbing to joints and extremities, but binding remains tight and structurally sound. The alternating red and yellow edge staining remains bright and distinct. Text block shows light, uniform toning with sporadic minor foxing. $3,500. Provenance: 1. William Stirling-Maxwell (1818-1878), 9th Baronet of Pollok, Scottish historical writer and bibliophile (with his bookplate on the front pastedown, and a second bookplate identifying this copy from his proverb collection at Keir on the rear pastedown). 2. Victor Samuel M. de Guinzbourg (1906-1976), diplomat and proverb collector (with his bookplate on the front free endpaper). The largest collection of its day, this monumental compilation of nearly 1,000 legal maxims served as a vital desk reference for 18th-century lawyers. Each entry features extensive legal commentary, supplemental vernacular sayings in prose and verse, and deep secondary citations. Jantz notes this work as "a rich collection, also folkloristically and philologically." This copy boasts an exceptional provenance, tracing back to two of the world's premier collectors of parabl.
