Zustand: FAIR. First edition. A slim book of verses about children in many countries and at various occupations, notable for the twelve chromolithographs by Frances Brundage. Each depicts a child posed in an appropriate costume. Although Mrs Brundage was one of the most prolific women illustrators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this is an uncommon and early example of her work as a book illustrator, including some of the ethnic children she was known for - little Japanese, French and German girls, a Highlander boy and more. Unpaginated, approximately 7 1/2 by 9 inches, bound in illustrated boards (the cover illustration is a composite taken from two plates inside) with a cloth spine. From the library of children's author and poet Myra Cohn Livingston (1926-1996), with her bookplate on the front pastedown. Underneath this is a previous owner's name - that of Peter Wilson Strader IV, who worked as a freelance director and scenic designer and was the guiding force behind the Players Theater of Sarasota, Florida for many years - dated in 1932 with the notation that this had been his father's book (the illustrated page preceding the title page includes a penciled gift inscription to this effect also.) Poor condition only - the binding is barely holding, and the rear endpaper is missing. Some light offsetting, foxing and age toning throughout. Tidemarks to the lower edges of the boards. One chromolithograph has a tear to the edge, but only affecting the margin, not the image. Despite the flaws to this book, the chromolithographs are quite stunning - and I think it adds to the charm to have the history of this copy laid out.…
