Paris: Rene Kieffer, Relieur-Editeur, [1925]. [vi], 126, [4] pp. Pochoir color text illustrations. Quarto (7-1/2" x 6"; 19 x 15 cm). Original red publisher's wrappers bound into (later?) quarter burgundy morocco over gold-speckled marbled boards, raised bands and lettering piece to spine, deckle fore edges, patterned endpapers. Front publisher's wrapper mended with cellotape and rehinged, moderate toning to interior, negligible light foxing to margins of a few leaves, illustrations vivid, ink presentation inscription to limitation leaf. A very good copy. $1,250. * From an edition limited to 800 copies, this copy unnumbered ("Reserve") with a presentation inscription from publisher Rene Kieffer to the President of the Societe des Decorateurs. The Societe des artistes decorateurs was a collective established in 1901 to promote French design and decorative arts. Its founding members were influential in the development and promotion of the Art Deco style; Maurice Bokanowski served as president at the time of Code Civil's publication. In this work, Hemard presents the official text of the sections of the French Civil Code dealing with family law with witty, and often mildly erotic, color pochoir illustrations. A prolific artist, illustrator, designer and author, Hemard is best-known for his humorously illustrated editions of serious non-fiction books. He applied this treatment to two other legal works, Code Penal (1940) and Code General des Impots Directs et Taxes Assimilees (1944). Signed.
