Bound in dark blue cloth with red and gold and black and brown decorations - a suprisingly intricate cover design for a book from the 1920s. Spine is faded darker than the boards. Hunting scenes depicted on this cover. Frontespiece engravings and illustration on title page are hand colored. Frontespiece is detached. The rest of the illustrations are in origial black and white only. Very good condition.

Normal wear and marks apply consistent with age and use. No Jacket. The cover is worn at the corner edges, spine faded, lovely gilt to endpapers. Personal pen inscription, dated 1882 on first page. Between the end of the Engravings on Wood page and the start of page 1 (Chapter the First) the binding has loosened from the base to two-thirds of the way up, so you can see gauze, and between page 64 and 65 the pages have come away from binding otherwise all other pages intact. 308 pages, all text and illustrations in good, readable order. Ten, beautiful, decorative steel engravings and host of engravings on wood. A humourous book, and worth preserving for the home library.

Any copy of this book I have seen looks as if it was produced in 1875, but whether it was or not, I am not sure - as they differ in appearance! This one has a beautiful cover in deep green cloth and the illustration all done in gold gilt, so it is certainly a luxurious edition - whether a 1st edition, I can't be sure. The head & tail of spine are worn; ; the brown endpapers are present, but the fep is partially detached; no inscriptions/handwriting; 7 plates; an attractive book. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall.
