Interior in very good condition apart from front free endpaper which show signs of have been bent in the past. The two last pages show also signs of have been bent on the top right side. Very good condition overall.; Since prehistoric times, people have sought a means to see their own image: at first reflected from smooth surface of water, then in polished stone, later in polished metal, and finally glass. Bronze mirrors were first produced around 3,000 BC in Egypt, from where they appear to have spread throughout the Mediterranean world and then into Asia. The earliest bronze disc mirrors found in China date to about 2,000 BC however, some scholars suggest that these mirrors may have been cast in central or northern Asia and imported into China. Chinese bronze mirrors are thin, two-sided, typically round discs. The bronze was polished with a reflective surface on one side, usually convex, and with various designs, based on Chinese mythology, ancient symbolism and ritual, cast in relief on the decorated side. Most mirrors have a slender loop or a pierced knob, usually hemispherical, on the decorated side, which was fitted with a cord to hold the mirror by hand or to hang at the belt. Mirrors occupied a very important place in Chinese culture and tradition. Not only were they used to reflect a person's face but, particularly in ancient times, they were thought to reflect the heart and soul. One entry in an ancient Chinese text dated 658 BC says, heaven has robbed him of his mirror', that is 'he has become blind to his own faults". Mirrors were treasured personal possessions and were used in religious rites, in temples and in tombs. They were often given as good luck gifts or to brides to ensure a happy and fruitful marriage. The custom of burying bronze mirrors with their owners to safeguard the passage of the soul to paradise was well established by the Warring States period (480-221 BC). With a few exceptions, all the Chinese mirrors that have been found were excavated from tombs, where some have been preserved for more than 2,500 years. The dynastic age of mirrors can usually be identified by the casting and the designs. Chinese bronze mirrors were cast from an alloy of copper, tin and lead, typically in the proportions of about 71 percent copper, 26 percent tin and 3 percent lead, with traces of other metals. In this volume, the mirrors from the collection of Mr Donald H. Graham, Jr. of Honolulu are lavishly illustrated and described in detail. Accompanying the essay on the history of Chinese bronze mirrors by a leading bronze mirror expert are studies on Han dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) mirrors with TLV designs and inscriptions on mirrors known as 'deities and animals with semicircles' and 'squares and deities in registers, An exhaustive listing of English, Chinese and Japanese publications is provided in the bibliography and the extensive glossary is an indispensable source of reference for understanding terms and the significance of designs. Profusely Illustrated (illustrator).

Woodcut or¬naments and initials, printer's device on title. Vellum. First edition of this catalogue of Europe's leading botanic garden. Many of the specimens Hermann collected in Africa and Cey¬lon are illustrated in the work. Whilst director of the botanic garden at Leiden (1679-95) he considerably increased the number of species there to about 3000, and he reorganized the garden on more systematic lines under the influence of Robert Morison whom he had visited at Oxford. The first glasshouses were built during Hermann's directorship, between 1680 and 1687,and he notes in his dedication that that these were heated and well-equipped to care for the influx of exotic and tender plants. The excellent plates are engraved in fine detail and inscribed above in Latin. This volume would appear to be the same later issue as the Hunt copy with 107 engravings. (A second auction ended 26th July 1861). Count Guglielmo Libri-Camucci, outstanding Florentine mathematician, is best known as a convicted cleptomaniac, who stole books and manuscripts from libraries in Italy and France while researching as a scholar owing to social introductions. His first thefts were scientific manuscripts and books of hours from the library of Lorenzo de Medici in Florence. Seeking greater opportunities he emigrated to France and befriended the politician François Guizot. By 1841, he was made chief inspector of French libraries with unsupervised access to collections all over France. Although massive thefts were discovered in 1847 with Libri as the prime suspect, he was shielded by Prosper Merimé and other friends, whom he lost during the 1848 Revolution. Fearing arrest for theft, he fled to London disguised as a political refugee, having beforehand sent some 30,000 books and manuscripts to be auctioned. After his conviction in absentia in France, Libri defended his reputation in London in a public letter written on his behalf by Achille Jubinal to the Athenaeum in 1851. With the help of Antonio Panizzi, director of the British Library, he was able to retain the trust of his English contacts, presenting himself as a bibliophile slandered by malicious political enemies who was forced to sell his collections because of his poor health, as explained in his lengthy (bilingual) introduction contained in the preliminaries. The extent of his thefts and deceptions was conclusively exposed after his death in 1869, when his collections were already sold. ' the first auction sale of rare books to describe in detail so many great classics in the mathematical and physical sciences.' (Norman). British Museum, List of Catalogues of English Book Sales, pp 295-96.
