Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good-. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. First Edition. 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 88 pages; HC with partial dust jacket. 1st edition. Bound in publisher's orange/red cloth with title lettering stamped in dark green to cover and spine. Top stain dark green. This 1st edition example prepared for the American market, printed and probably bound in Great Britain. Cloth color uniform including spine and title lettering bright. Color frontis and 13 plates by Rountree complete and clean. Pin head sized rub through to cloth at two corners. Trace shelf soiling to cloth at spine. A very small, shallow drip stain to the top edge of the first 4 or 5 leaves; essentially the top 16th of a dime in a cresent shape. Dust jacket front panel and front flap are present with the American issue price of $2.00 intact on the top corner of the unclipped flap. Color plate tipped onto the front jacket panel. The remaining portions of the jacket are toned and edge rubbed with shallow chipping along the lower edge of the front panel and a damp line in the top spine corner of the same panel. Front flap tenuously attached to the front panel. Prior owner name penciled neatly to front endpage. Just mild foxing and offset toning from jacket flaps to the endpages. Hinges just a little tender; a few leaves with light soiling. A sound, complete and generally clean copy with a partial dust jacket. The much less frequently seen US edition of O'Brian's first work written when he was just 12 years old. VG-/Fair.
