Full calf binding with leather spine label. Worn along edges; brief exposure; chipping; split to bottom of front joint. Binding sound; a few marks and staining to endpapers; else unmarked and Very Good. History and artistic description of the Virgin of Los Remedios, including an extensive description of the Spaniards, led by Hernan Cortes, imposing Christianity on the Native Americans and supplanting their religion as part of their conquest. The Templo Mayor of Tenochtitlan, was dedicated to Huitzilopochtli, god of war, and Tlaloc, god of rain and agriculture. The Spaniards "purified" the temple with a crucifix and an image of the Virgin Mary, leading to arguments over the competing faiths, tensions rose, and Cortes promised rain would fall as a demonstration of his god's power. According to the legend, rain unexpectedly fell the next day, was interpreted as a miracle, and strengthened the conqueror's position among the indigenous people. La imagen fue traída de España por el soldado Juan Rodríguez de Villafuerte, quien acompañó a Hernán Cortés en su viaje de conquista. Después de muchos sacrificios, Cortés y su pequeño ejército arribaron a la gran Tenochtitlán. Ahí fueron cordialmente recibidos por Moctezuma. Muerto este y teniendo que ir Cortés a Veracruz a enfrentar a Pánfilo de Narváez los mexicas se rebelaron contra los españoles y entre el 30 de junio y el 1 de julio de 1520, en la que se conoce como Noche Triste, fueron forzados a salir hacia el oeste de la ciudad, por el camino de Tacuba.Durante esa retirada, abandonaron todo lo necesario para facilitar la salida y por ese motivo la pequeña imagen fue escondida bajo un maguey. Fue encontrada en 1540 por el indígena Juan Ce Cuautli, quien la llevó a su casa en San Juan Totoltepec. La noticia llegó a los españoles, quienes habían venerado esta imagen desde el principio de la conquista, así como los nativos, quienes encontraron en ella consuelo en medio de sus dificultades; erigieron primero una ermita en este cerrito llamado Otomcapulco.
