(Ellen Bowring-Hanbury) to bookplate.First edition in English of this important account of an early embassy to China, our copy from the library of SirErasmus Gower, commander of the Macartney Embassy, Britain's first and pivotal delegation to the Qing Empire. The author was a Dane in the service of Peter the Great, for whom he embarked on an embassy to Peking in 16925 in quest of further trade agreements, and for whom this journal (first published 1704 in Dutch) was composed. 'Ides'[s] descriptions of the places and people he saw along the way are unusually good, and through them his readers first encountered several tribes in eastern Siberia and Mongolia. He also wrote vivid, detailed descriptions of the Great Wall, of his reception by officials there, of his introduction to Peking, the banquets and entertainments he attended, the imperial palace and the K'ang-hsi emperor himself. Appended to Ides'[s] journal is a brief description of China attributed to a Chinese Christian named Dionysius Kao. Like the Jesuit descriptions it treats each province, including Liaotung, separately before describing in general the people, their customs, their religions, the land, its fruits, neighbouring countries, and recent history. Considerable space is devoted to the history of Christianity in China, and the book ends with an adulatory description of the K'ang-hsi emperor and expressions of optimism regarding his and China's conversion to Christianity' (Lach and Van Kley III/1, p.504). 'The expedition added considerable geographical knowledge to the little that was known about Manchuria and China' (Cox I, p.331) and inspired some of the adventures told by Defoe in the second part of Robinson Crusoe. The present copy was owned and inscribed by SirErasmus Gower (17421814). A Welshman of humble birth, he served the Royal Navy with distinction in the Indian Ocean and Newfoundland before being charged with 'the commission of a lifetime': the command of Britain's first embassy to China, under Lord Macartney in 17924. 'Despite severe illness he carried out his orders with flair and integrity, far from over-awed by his mission' (Bates, p.3). Apart from steering this elaborate fleet through pirates and disease, losing hundreds of men on the voyage, Gower was also entrusted with the embassy's secret offshoot mission to Japan and the Philippines. His journal of the voyage would later supply much of the material for Staunton's celebrated account of the embassy. 'If the mission did not have the success hoped for, it was no fault ofGower's' (ODNB). He may have found some comfort in Ides's account of another intellectually fruitful but ultimately unsuccessful mission in search of better trade relations with China. Unusually our copy is bound with engravings from the Dutch original rather t.

Rebound and fully conserved in recent, full panelled calf, letter-piece gilt and dated at foot. Engraved title-page, one folding plate and map lined, some corners infilled and supported. Small library stamp to foot of title-page and old tape stains to fore-edge of engraved title-page. Minimal staining and browning and a few corners discretely supported. Ides was a Danish traveller and diplomat who travelled to China as an ambassador from Russia between the years 1692-94. This account was originally printed in Dutch (1704) at the direction of Burgomaster Witzen before being "faithfully done into English" in this edition. Recognised as "one of the most detailed and accurate descriptions of inner Asia up to that time", it also contained the first European account of the Gobi desert. ESTC T55175. Cordier 2468. Parker, 1706. First English edition. Small quarto (9 9/16 x 7 1/2 inches; 244 x 190 mm)). [12], 191, 190-210 pp. Complete with an engraved alegorical additonal title-page (dated 1705), a large folding map and 30 engraved plates, eight of which are folding. Contemporary paneled calf, rebacked to style. Spine with red morocco spine label. Top edge dyed brown, others speckled red. Some general light foxing and toning. Overall a very good copy. "In 1692, Evert Ysbrants Ides was asked by Tsar Peter to serve as ambassador to the Emperor of China. Before his return to Moscow in 1695, he passed through many countries and regions, including Perm, Siberia, and 'Great Tartary' (West Asia)." (NYPL). "Tsar Peter Alekseevich invested resources in maintaining his relationship with China, dispatching an embassy in 1692. He appointed a foreign diplomat, Eberhard Isbrand Ides, to act as his ambassador and Adam Brand from Lubeck as the embassy's secretary.18 The embassy itself included more than 250 men, including nobles and merchants, both to negotiate new terms following Nerchinsk but also to investigate the market in Beijing, 'where Silk, Cloath, Gold and Silver, Jewels and all sorts of fine Manufactures, were sold.' Ides also toured 'the Emperor's Dispensary, which I was willing to make some Scrutiny into, it being full stock'd with all sorts of Roots, Herbs, and Med'cines. . Next to this was a Toy-shop, which I enter'd, and bought what I like.'" (Oxford Research Encyclopedia). "Defoe's novel [The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe] paints an impressive picture of Russia. The writer himself had never been to this part of the world, and he based the protagonist's adventures on the true tales of travelers. Izbran Ides and Adam Brand, who had traveled from Moscow to Peking." (Robinson Crusoe and Daniel Defoe's guide to Siberia. Ekaterina Aleeva). ESTC T55175 HBS 69427. $4,000.

In den WarenkorbRare and richly illustrated work on the three-year journey (1692-1695) of a Russian envoy from Moscow to Beijing, in order to negotiate trade relations between Russia and China. The expedition was undertaken by a small group of people, led by the Danish merchant of Dutch descent and diplomat Evert Ysbrand Ides (1657-1708), in the service of Tsar Peter the Great (1672-1725). It greatly added to the geographical knowledge on Northern Manchuria and China. The present account provides one of the first Western descriptions of the Gobi Desert, the Dalai Lama & Buddhism, Lake Baikal, the Great Wall, Mongolia, the city of Beijing, Guangzhou, Siberia, and the customs of the Siberian people. The map Ides used for his journey had been created by Dutch cartographer, wroter, diplomat, and Amsterdam mayor Nicolaas Witsen (1641-1717) in 1687. Ides supplemented and improved it during his travels. After his return, Ides sent Witsen the new map and the transcription of his travel journal. Witsen translated it into Dutch and published it in 1704, with the corrected map. The work became popular and was soon translated into French, English and German. The present copy is the second Dutch edition, published a few years after the first.Ides' diplomatic visit was successful. China received the envoy courteously and enabled it to conduct its business. Ides' envoy had a much easier time with the Chinese than many earlier and later Russian envoys. Peter the Great was so pleased with the results, that he made Ides a member of his Privy Council. All engravings are very crisp and clear. The edges and corners of the boards are scuffed and the front and back are somewhat rubbed, showing the cardboard underneath. The end leaves, title-page, and blank recto of the frontispiece are foxed, without affecting the engraving, with a water stain in the top corner of the 4 leaves in signature , and on the outer half of pp. 231-end of the work. Otherwise in good condition.l Catalogue de la section des Russica, I176; Cordier, Sinica, p. 2469; Howgego, vol. 1, 14; STCN 169912930 (11 copies); Tiele 519; WorldCat 902472370, 257635409, 561453661, 894528946, 65093708 (19 copies, including 7 also in STCN); cf. This work like most of its contemporaries of this period were always written in "Old English." That means instead of using "s" where we now would spell that word correctly, "Old English" always used "f" to replace all "s" spellings. This is a common feature for books from around 1500 onwards until it was changed to use "s" in the modern epoch. This book being printed more than 300 years ago uses that old style and format. . *** SUBTITLE continued: ". and the Customs of the Barbarous Inhabitants; with Reference to their Religion, Government, Marriages, daily Employments [sic], Habits, Habitations, Diet, Death, Funerals &c.
