Contemporary brown leather binding with fore-edge flap, panel design, ruled frames and central blind and red stamped medallions. This is a documented Maghribi teaching copy of Ibn Hisham's Mughni al-Labib, carrying explicit evidence of transmission in Tlemcen, Algeria, where it was read to the renowned linguist and grammarian Al-Murabit al-Dalai, brother of the Sultan of Fez. - Ibn Hisham's treatise is the defining post-classical synthesis of Arabic syntax, written for advanced jurists and grammarians, and was prized for its tight argumentative structure and its command of earlier authorities. The present manuscript preserves the complete two-volume text and is densely equipped for use: rubrication structures the page, while interlinear and marginal layers develop the argument, and supply parallels. The commentary strata demonstrably draw on al-Damamini's commentary on the Mughni, alongside Al-Shumuni's commentary on the same work, turning the codex into a working instrument rather than a mere witness. - After the two parts of the Mughni follows a separate grammatical treatise, largely based on al-Suyuti's "Ham' al-Hawami' fi Sharh Jam' al-Jawami'", especially the section on temporal adverbial particles, with further reference to Sibawayh's Al-Kitab and other authorities. This work is distinct and not integral to Ibn Hisham's text. - Copied within the Dalai scholarly milieu during the final decades of Dilai intellectual hegemony, the manuscript exemplifies the Maghrib's 17th century culture of advanced grammatical study and heavily glossed, authority-driven reading. - Some worming throughout, sometimes affecting text. An exposition of the rules of Arabic grammatical inflections by Ibn Hisham al-Ansari (1309-1360 CE), written around 1348/49 CE as a commentary on his own poem "Qawa'id al-I'rab". Al-Ansari's works on syntactic analysis and grammar were widespread not only across Egypt but indeed throughout the entire Arab world, and were hailed in their time for their conciseness. He also wrote poetry and taught several notable students, including Ibn al-Mulaqqin (1323-1401 CE), Ibrahim Ibn Othman al-Samnoodi (ca. 1310-1908 CE), and Jalal Ibn Ahmad al-Tabrizi al-Milassi (1329-1390 CE). Numerous commentaries were written on "Al-Iraab Aan Qawa'id al-I'rab", the most celebrated of which is that by al-Kafiyadji (1380-1474 CE). - The author's name appears in the colophon along with the scribe's name Souliman Ibn Mohamed Al (?), dated 1088 H (1677/8 CE). - Well preserved with only very light soiling, generally confined to the margins. First edition and the important first ever print publication of this medieval history of horsemanship, commonly known as the Book of Horses, authored by Muslim historian Hisham ibn al-Kalbi (737-819) in the late 8th or early 9th century. Al-Kalbi is most famous for his writings of human history, but here he covers the lineages of horses rather than the genealogies of the Arabs. - Detailing the history of Arab horsemanship both before and after the rise of Islam, al-Kalbi traced the histories of the most famous individual horses and horsemen and the most famous equine lineages, following sire lines. His text provides early versions of famous religious descriptions of the origin of Arabian horses: for example, the domestication of the horse by Abraham's son Ishmael, and the story of the stud of King Solomon. - The editor of this history, the Egyptian philologist Ahmad Zaki Pasha (1867-1934), was himself an important historian and Arabic linguist. He was a fellow of the Institut d'Égypte, the Royal Geographical Society, and the Royal Asiatic Society in London and a well-respected figure in pan-Arabian diplomacy. - Uncut and untrimmed as issued. The text is critical of pre-Islamic religion and decries the state of religious corruption which the Arabs had supposedly descended to since the founding of the Kaaba. The book was instrumental in identifying "shirk" (the sin of polytheism) with the idolatry of the pre-Islamic Arabs. Ahmad Zaki Pasha, the Egyptian philologist, discovered the text; he bought the sole extant manuscript at auction in Damascus. The manuscript, one of many in his extensive collection, was donated to the state after his death in 1934. - Edge defects to French title page, otherwise insignificant edge wear; a good, untrimmed copy.
