Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Coins, for reasons that do not always make sense, are often treated by field excavators as more reliable chronological indexes than other classes of artifacts. This always makes their discovery a welcome event, especially when they are silver or gold, which tend to survive in the ground in a more recognizable state than their bronze counterparts. The Red Figure pottery does not have quite the same chronological relevance as the coins but does on occasion contribute to the dating of archaeological contexts. Its often high quality and interesting variety of shapes has already generated commentary elsewhere in addition to what is presented here. University Museum Monograph, 97.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. xl, 299 pages : illustrations (some color) ; 26 cm. A collection of 21 previously published essays. Original dates of publication range from 1964 to 1992. 'A.D. (Dale) Trendall s work on vase-painting in South Italy defined the discipline. Alongside his fundamental monographs, he wrote many shorter studies of particular vases, painters and subjects. These remain very significant for our understanding of the development of red-figure vase-painting in South Italy and Sicily during the Classical period. In this collection Ian McPhee has selected twenty-one of Trendall s most important and entertaining articles. They explore the representation of myths and dramatic scenes and offer detailed analyses of regional styles and individual painters.'.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In 1971 in the southwestern area of the Roman Forum of Corinth a round-bottomed drainage channel was discovered filled with the largest deposit of pottery of the 4th century ever found in the city, some coins, terracotta figurines, and metal and stone objects. This volume publishes the pottery and metal and stone objects, and includes a re-examination of the coins by Orestes Zervos. Some of the cooking ware has been subjected to neutron activation analysis, and a statistical analysis of all recovered pottery has been completed. The contents of Drain 1971-1 are important for the function of the Classical buildings in this part of Corinth, especially Buildings I and II, and for the chronology of the renovation program that included the construction of the South Stoa, which was probably not built before the last decade of the 4th century.…

4°. 175 p., [4], 64 Tafeln, Pappband (sehr gut erhalten) (=Beiheft zur Halbjahresschrift "Antike Kunst", 14) This book deals with the red-figured fish-plates that were produced during the fourth century B. C., mainly in Athens and, in particular, in the Greek colonies of Sicily and Southern Italy. About 1000 fragments or whole plates have been listed, of which about five-sixths come from Magna Graecia. The immediate precursors of the figured fish-plates are also considered. Although red-figured fish-plates have been the subject of a few earlier studies, this is the first attempt to catalogue and to discuss them in a comprehensive manner. The lists are as complete as possible, including fish-plates in private collections or on the market as well as those from regular excavations. The authors have attempted firstly to classify all the fish-plates according to their fabrics (e. g. Attic, Corinthian, Chalcidic; Sicilian, Campanian, Paestan, Apulian), and then, within each fabric, to arrange them in stylistic groups, identifying specific painters where possible. They have also tried to establish a more precise chronology than has been done previously, both a relative chronology based upon stylistic criteria and an absolute one derived mainly from tomb-contexts. On occasion it has been possible, especially for South Italian fish-plates, to suggest correlations between their painters and those of larger red-figured vases. Tentative identifications of the fish have also been given. The text is accompanied by 68 plates (4 in colour) which illustrate fish-plates from all the fabrics and by all the more important painters, as well as by several diagrams representing the various species of fish depicted upon the plates and a selection of typical profiles. …
