Lawrence: University of Kansas Press, 1953, 296pp., . The life of Francis Huntington Snow was varied and eventful. After a childhood in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, in a home visited by prominent reformers, Snow studied at Williams College under Mark Hopkins and other eminent teachers, graduating at the head of a class renowned in Williams annals. Later he attended the Andover Theological Seminary. During the Civil War, as a delegate of the Christian Commission, he shared some of the soldiers' hardships and, at a dramatic moment, saw Grant, Lee, and other famous leaders. This book tells the story of Snow's early years partly by means of generous citations from his journals, which besides recording his experiences with directness often graphically, reflect an engaging personality. - In 1866, when the University of Kansas was established, Snow joined its faculty. In the young state of Kansas he became a pioneer scientist as well as a pioneer educator. His interests ranged from Kansas birds and Kansas weather to the stars that fell on Kansas, though he specialized in entomology and led many expeditions to collect scientific specimens. As a teacher of the sciences and later as Chancellor of the University he assumed a major role in its development. Snow of Kansas attempts to portray his career in relation not only to that development but also to the changing ideas and problems of his time.
