John Henry Hutton war jahrzehntelang in Indien einer der bedeutendsten Ethnologen und Anthropologen mit wichtigen Publikationen zu seinem Spezialgebiet, den Naga-Völkern in Assam. Ihm wurde als 'Census-Commissioner' die Organisation des 1931er-Census übertragen; eine Herkules-Aufgabe, die ohne seine enormen Kenntnisse und seinen Einsatz nicht diesen großen Erfolg gehabt hätte: Dieser Census meisterte zum ersten Mal seit einem eher bescheidenen Versuch bei dem 1901er-Census die Aufgabe, einen umfassenden Überblick auch und gerade über die unzählig vielen wenig erforschten Völkerstämme Indiens zu bekommen. Das gelang u.a. deshalb, weil Hutton sich die Mitarbeit fast aller namhaften Ethnologen Indiens für dieses Projekt sichern konnte, u.a. Mills, K. Iyer, Grigson et.al. Die wesentlichen ethnologisch/anthropologischen Ergebnisse sind in diesen beiden wichtigsten Publikationen zusammengefasst. Beide selten und mit gutem Fotomaterial. Der Part II dieses Vol.I (genannt 'Imperial Table', hier nicht mitangeboten) enthält ausschließlich Tabellen, quasi die statist. Ergebnisse der Zählungen, kein Text, keine Fotos.
