Condition : very good - In May 1993, the World Health Assembly adopted a resolution on maternal and child health, emphasizing the elimination of harmful practices affecting the health of women and children and decrying the persistence of practices like dietary limitations during pregnancy. This book investigates the reduction of food intake during pregnancy in developing countries. The custom was also observed in nineteenth century Europe. Several authors believe that the reason behind this custom is that women hope to have a small child and thus an easy delivery. The book documents the extent of dietary limitation during pregnancy in rural South India and assesses whether the limitation is indeed harmful and for who it might be harmful: for the mother, the child or for both. Besides nutritional intake, the book reports on the beliefs of Indian women about food behaviour in general and other proper behaviour during pregnancy. Their motives behind dietary limitation are different from the one mentioned above.
