Fold out, engraved frontispiece giving a view of Malham Water and two further engravings, all drawn by A Devis and engraved by W Skelton. In later binding, plain cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine. Bumped spine heel, rubbed head. Corners rounded and front board rubbed on edge. Blemish bottom left on front board. Slightly tanned endpapers with previous owner's bookplate, scarred, on front paste down. Original paper cover has small stain on front, some mild page toning, else internally neat and clean. Three foldout engravings, 8.5 x 5.5", gilt ruled and blindstamped full green morocco, raised bands, highly decorated panels, red leather spine label, covers have gilt dec edges, teg, (8), 199 + index + directions to binder. Covers have light scuffing/scratching, spine darkened and label chipped, corners/spine tips bumped and worn, contemporary bookplate, plates have foxing and one has an archival repair else very good condition. The bookplate is that of James Whatman (the Younger, not shown), the son of James Whatman, the Elder (1702-1798). The father was a paper maker, the inventor of woven paper which was used for high quality art and printing, "the Younger" (1741-1798) continued his father's work. On the title page is stated that it was printed at the Logographic Press. Logographic printing is a form of movable type printing where the font is comprised of words/parts of words instead of single letters. Although not in wide use, several books were produced using this method in the 18th century. A gorgeous book with great history. FIRST EDITION.…
