Erstes Buch des englischen-jüdischen Journalisten und Autors. Brunton (1898-1981) beschäftigte sich bereits seit seiner Jugendzeit mit dem Spiritismus, war zeitweise Mitglied der Theosophischen Gesellschaft und danach der Spiritualist Society. 1930 reiste er erstmals nach Indien, weil er Yogis, Fakire, Gurus und ihre Adepten direkt kennenlernen wollte, und fand in Ramana Maharshi seinen eigenen Guru. Durch eine schwere Erkrankung gezwungen nach England zurückzukehren, schrieb er während seiner Rekonvaleszenz vorliegendes Buch, das 1934 unter dem Titel "A Search in Secret India" erschien. Nach weiteren Reisen in Indien und Ägypten ließ er sich 1938 in den USA nieder. Er schrieb insgesamt 13 Bücher zu diesem und ähnlichen Themen (Yoga, altägyptische Mystik etc.).
