Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. First Edition, First Printing. No Flaws or Blemishes but minimal shelf handling; Still Gift Quality. 9.25 inches tall; 258 pages with Chapter Notes, Bibliography and Index. The book vividly portrays Hunt's transformation from a downed pilot into a guerrilla fighter, detailing his strategic alliances with Filipino resistance groups and his daring escapades behind enemy lines. Through meticulous research and interviews, Bernard Norling enriches the narrative with historical context, offering insights into the broader military strategies and socio-political landscape of the Pacific Theater. This memoir provides a firsthand account of Hunt's survival and resistance against Japanese forces after being shot down over the Philippines in 1942. Hunt's narrative is both personal and poignant, illustrating the daily struggles and triumphs of clandestine warfare. His encounters with local villagers, the challenges of evading Japanese patrols, and the psychological toll of living in constant danger are portrayed with gripping realism. The authors skillfully blend Hunt's personal anecdotes with broader historical analysis, providing readers with a comprehensive understanding of the guerrilla warfare tactics employed in the Philippines.

DJ has slight wear and soiling. Jeffrey M. "Jeff" Shaara (born February 21, 1952) is an American novelist and the son of Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Shaara. He graduated from Florida State University in 1974 with a degree in Criminology. He wrote Gods and Generals and The Last Full Measure, which are the prequel and sequel, respectively, to his father Michael's award-winning novel The Killer Angels. Jeff followed his father's footsteps upon the latter's death, writing historical fiction and documenting the American wars and their most historically relevant characters. In total, Jeff has written fifteen New York Times best-selling novels. Jeff delivered the commencement speech at University of Delaware's 2005 undergraduate ceremony. Jeff has deemed this "one of the most important moments in his life." He completed a trilogy in 2010 about World War II in the European and North African theaters. A fourth World War II novel, titled The Final Storm, covers the end of the war in the Pacific. Shaara has received the W.Y. Boyd Literary Award for Excellence in Military Fiction from the American Library Association in 2022 for The Eagle's Claw, in 2018 for The Frozen Hours, in 2005 for To The Last Man: A Novel of The First World War, and in 1997 for Gods and Generals. The American Library Association's Reference and Users Services Association recognized The Steel Wave as a 2009 Notable Book. He has also been awarded The Lincoln Forum's "Richard Nelson Current Award of Achievement", and the New York Civil War Round Table's "Bell I. Wiley Award". The Final Storm opens a new front in Jeff Shaara's gripping chronicle of World War II as soldiers, sailors, and marines sacrifice all for one final push toward decisive victory in the fierce maelstrom of the Pacific theater. As the war in Europe winds down in the wake of the Normandy invasion, the United States has turned its vast military resources toward an all-out effort against the Japanese. In the spring of 1945, Japan's empire has been pressed slowly back toward its home islands, and the Americans mount a furious assault on the last great stepping-stone to Japan itself--the heavily fortified island of Okinawa. The three-month battle will feature some of the most vicious combat of the entire war, as American troops confront an enemy that would rather be slaughtered than experience the shame of surrender. With a narrative dexterity befitting his status as a master storyteller, Shaara relates the story of the struggle for Okinawa through the eyes of combatants on both sides: Private Clay Adams, a young marine whose brother Jesse has already earned his share of glory as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne in Europe; Admiral Chester Nimitz, who must unite rival army and marine commanders into a cooperative effort; General Simon Bolivar Buckner, Jr., the American ground commander trying to live up to the legacy of his father, who led Confederate troops during the Civil War; and General Mitsura Ushijima, the Japanese general in charge of defending the island, who understands what Tokyo will not believe: that his own fight to the death will only delay the inevitable, as the Americans continue their advance toward the home islands and ultimate victory. With the fights raging across the Pacific, a different kind of campaign is being waged in extraordinary secrecy: the development of a weapon so powerful, not even the scientists who build it know just what they are about to unleash. Colonel Paul Tibbets, one of the finest bomber pilots in the U.S. Army Air Corps, is selected to lead the mission to drop the horrific new weapon on a Japanese city. As the new president, Harry S Truman, mulls his options, and a Japanese physician named Okiro Hamishita cares for patients at a clinic near the city of Hiroshima, citizens on the home front await the day of reckoning that everyone knows is coming. A fitting conclusion to one of the most riveting sagas in military fiction, Th.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. STUDENT PILOT HANDBOOK HUNT & FAHRINGER 1943 1ST PRINTING FLEXIBLE COVERS. I am pleased to offer a very rare (only one copy found online) vintage book about piloting an airplane. I would have expected to find many but perhaps they were never published in bulk. Please find: Student Pilot Handbook by Jack Hunt & Ray Fahringer (the later also did the illustrations). The small soft cover (flexible covers) book (4 ¼ x 7 inches, 251 pages) was published by Books Inc. of New York and Boston dated March 1943 and the First Printing of the First Edition (so stated). The covers are flexible maroon boards with gilt titles on cover and spine. The book is amply illustrated throughout, on almost every page, with cartoon like drawings, many humorous, on the ins and outs of piloting a plane. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The flexible hard covers show wear and tear from rubbing and bumping and include creases across both covers. The gilt titles are worn too but still legible (please see the photos). Inside a former owner (pilot learner) has left his inked name and training unit. This is the only mark I found in the book and the pages are clean and bright without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
