Heraldic bookplates of the John de Burgh, Earl of Clanricarde.; Vol. II is the second edition and slighly larger. .The Spectacle de la nature of the abbé Noël-Antoine Pluche (1688-1761) was a huge publishing success in 18th century France and Europe (with translations into five other languages), but has attracted the attention of historians only recently. Its form of natural theological argument, though widely read at the time, has been overshadowed in historical accounts by the better-studied arguments from design rationally understood. Pluche emphasized instead the limits of human reason and argued for the greatness of God from the wonderful and unfathomable harmony of nature.PROVENANCE: John Thomas de Burgh, the 13th Earl of Clanricarde, was a British Army officer and politician who was the governor of Kingston-upon-Hull. He was born in 1744 and died in 1808, and was also created the 1st Earl of Clanricarde (with a special remainder to his daughters) in 1800. Another notable person with this name is his son, Ulick John de Burgh, the 1st Marquess of Clanricarde, who lived from 1802 to 1874 and was a prominent politician and ambassador. .

A collection of fourteen fables, the longer ones translated for the most part by the editor; but there are contributions as well by Congreve, Prior, Rowe, Fenton, Cob…b, and Ozell. The origins of Samuel Humphreys (c. 1697-1737) are obscure. For most of the 1730s he was the chief factotum for Handel at the King's Theatre, writing several librettos including those for Athalia and Deborah, and translations for those written in Italian such as Rinaldo (1731) and Ezio (1732). His most popular work was his Peruvian Tales (1734), from the French of Gueullette, which went through many editions. 'Humphreys was a poor poet and a worse dramatist', in the opinion of New Grove. This volume of translations from La Fontaine was published by Edmund Curll, whose agreement with Humphreys survives at the British Library (Add MS 38728), promising the translator two guineas for each sheet of the French, of which Humphreys appears to have provided five. A continuation was evidently planned, as the last page concludes with 'The end of the first volume', but no more appeared. With an engraved frontispiece and eight half-page vignettes, all signed 'Parr' this must be one of the Parr family who flourished in the late 1730s and 1740s: either Nathaniel (d. 1751) or his brother Richard. Prior was a poet, statesman, and Tory ally to Robert Harley and the Scriblerians. His biographer states that his primary interests were 'women, collecting, friends, a country estate, and writing.' He was 'arguably the most important poet writing in English between the death of Dryden (1700) and the poetic majority of Pope in 1712'. He proved a continually popular entry in miscellanies, a form of publication which gathered together various works, sometimes on a theme. This set is a rather curious miscellany, while dominated by Prior's works, approximately the final third of volume 2 consists of 'Original Poems and Translations by Various Hands' - a deliberately vague title to a truly varied selection of poetry. A reader's interest may have been piqued by the first poem in the section, Hildebrand Jacob's amatory verse on female auto-eroticism 'The Curious Maid' (often misattributed to Prior), which is accompanied by an engraved plate of a woman using a mirror to peek under her own skirts. What follows are a series of amatory, bawdy, and controversial works, many laden with innuendo (as in 'The Silent Flute: Or the Members Speech to their Soveraign' [sic.]), while others use the tried-and-true guise of classical translation to depict scenes of 'heaving breasts and extended thighs'. Other poems in the collection are on less lurid but still interesting topics: Bedlam, snuff, marriage, politics, and the manners of the day. The title rather overstates the 'original' nature of the works: they mostly appear to be printed from earlier sources, but their gathering together here nonetheless places these poems in new contexts. Miscellanies were an important venue for erotic, amatory, and controversial works (indeed, much of John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester's poetry was first published in miscellanies by Edmund Curll).
